Welcome to our beloved blog readers in Croatia, Costa Rica and Brazil!
For those of you who live outside America, the Republican Party is a far right wing coalition of Jump-4-Jesus evangelicals, Yosemite Sam gun nuts, fringe anti-government anarchists, rich greedy multimillionaires and war mongering radicals who like to see us invade the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.
Of course, in spite of this, we respect their members who serve in public office and the long hours they put in up in Washington, DC, and on the golf courses they play on for fundraisers.
Here are ten more Republican House members and the years in which they will turn 103, when their seats might become competitive again:
1. Cong. Rob Wittman (R-Va., pict. top) 2062
2. Cong. Richard Hudson (R-NC, pict. center) 2074
3. Cong. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC, pict. bottom) 2070
4. Cong. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) 2069
5. Cong. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) 2073
6. Cong. John Culberson (R-Tex.) 2059
7. Cong. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) 2063
8. Cong. Chris Smith (R-NJ) 2056
9. Cong. John Duncan (R-TN) 2050
10. Cong. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc., failed 2012 veep nominee) 2073

Silly Photo to Fill Space: Things Republicans Like
The great Mel Brooks, who is thankfully still with us, said the best way to get even with your enemies is to make fun of them. And, we can't think of any way to get back at real-life Yosemite Sam characters than to stick to them. We sure hope the late great Soupy Sales, who railed from West Virginia (which has alas evolved into a red state) would agree with us.
Today, we are thus featuring a Big Foot Monster Truck in our first in our month-long series of Silly Photos to Fill Space dedicate to Things Republicans like.
For those of you in Antwerp, Belgium, who have not been exposed to this side of American culture, the Big Foot, which shares its name with a mythological creature of the woods, is basically a big pickup truck with big wheels that arbitrarily crushes things.
When I happened to be in the parking lot of the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC, on the eve of a monster truck show, I was amazed how many people were lining their vehicles up to get in.
This weekend, at least three incarnations of Big Foot will be touring America; the Summit Racing Big Foot #18 will be in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on March 9th.
Meanwhile, its cousin Bigfoot #15 will be in Jonesboro, Arkansas, for shows on both March 8th and 9th and Bigfoot #10 will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a state which actually went blue for Barack Obama!

Happy Belated 50th Birthday to President Barack Obama

Everyone from the far-right nuts at Fox News to the very liberal idealists at "The Nation" seem to be criticizing President Barack Obama, but I'm fairly pleased. However, even though I'm a fairly partisan Democrat (in the South, most Republican are Yosemite Sam gun nuts, radical Chicken Little evangelists or militant patriots with American flag shower curtains or a combination of the three, perhaps it's differnt in Maine. Then again, maybe not!) I must find his Blackberry obsession a bit annoying.
I actually first heard the term Blackberry in reference to George H.W. Bush, who we like to call Papa Smurf here. As ironic as the world is, perhaps Obama blackberries Papa Smurf more than George W. Bush does. Where is he these days? Yeah, I imagine he is on a power lawnmower in Crawford, Texas, too!
At any rate, happy belated 50th birthday to President Obama. We gather from Politico.com and NPR's "All Things Considered" that he had quite a bash with Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Tom Hanks and Tim Kaine, the former governor of Virginia and now official U.S. Senate candidate on-hand.

Today is My 40th Birthday, and I am NOT Turning into a Republican

I do have good friends who are Republicans, many of whom went to high school with me in the Roanoke, Va., area, so I will say that not all of them are gun nuts, religious whackos or extreme anti-government lunatics, but then again quite a few of them are-LOL!
In all seriousness, I want to thank everyone who wished me a Happy Birthday on Facebook whatever their politics might be.
Alas, since today is a work day, I will not be able to go UFO-watching in Logan, Utah, but perhaps this time next year I can just that (of course, we are not being enitrely serious here).
Ironically, today is also the 60th birthday of Gov. Rick Perry (R-Tex., pictured here along with Yosemite Sam and the Rev. John Hagee) who used to be a Democrat, or at least that's what Karl Rove said on "The Charlie Rose Show" last year, but I will not be joining the GOP anytime soon, or at least until Sarah Palin is kidnapped by those very aliens who are hanging out in Utah.

Silly Photo to Fill Space_ Zhu Zhu Pets

I could have alternatively titled this entry: "Why I'm Glad I Don't Have Kids!"
Though liberal-turned-conservative P.J. O'Rourke, now a contributor to the neo-conservative journal "The Weekly Standard" (which I actually read from time to time) maintains that somehow having a daughter made him go from being Michael Moore to Dick Cheney overnight....I suppose as I've gotten older I've gone from Michael Moore to Bill Clinton, and that seems conservative enough!
I don't know how it is in your part of the country, but here in Dixie, the conservative coalition seems to be made up of religious zealots, Yosemite Sam gun nuts and radical Ayn Rand anti-government types. I know moderate conservative columnist David Brooks was in North Carolina last year, but I wonder if he got a chance to talk to people at the Waffle House in Greensboro to see how far, far right they are........?!
Hmm.......this was NOT supposed to be a political entry.....oh well!
