The University of Florida Gators are only the fifth school to win a NCAA Women's Gymnastics title; they join the ranks of UCLA, Utah, Georgia and Alabama. Each of those schools, except Utah, qualified for the Super Six finals.
In victory, the Gators edged out second-place Oklahoma, third-place Alabama, the two-time NCAA champ and fourth place UCLA, the host school. LSU finished fifth; Georgia came in sixth.
For Gators' Coach Rhonda Faehn, a UCLA alum in her 11th year as coach of Florida after a coaching stint at Penn State, the title comes after years of heart-breaking near misses, includes last year's NCAA Championships in Georgia.
The Gators team consists of two Olympians: British national Marissa King, who also celebrated a birthday on Saturday and American Bridget Sloan, who is a freshman from Pittsboro, Ind.
Other stand-outs on the squad include Kytra Hunter (pictured top), Randy Stageberg (pictured bottom), Ashanee Dickerson and Alaina Johnson.
Here is the order of finish:
1. Florida 197.575
2. Oklahoma 197.375
3. Alabama 197.100
4. UCLA 197.100
5. LSU 197.050
6. Georgia 196.675
We issued a SPOILER ALERT because the meets airs on ESPN-U at 8:00 p.m. on April 30th.

Reptile Week Cont'd_ The Alligators
Yesterday, we started with the turtles. We forgot to mention that the Minnesota-based folk/rock band Trampled By Turtles will be performing in Buffalo, NY, at the Town Ballroom and The Port City Music Hall in Portland, Maine, on Dec. 2, in addition to their show at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. The band plays many other days in the northeast during that interval as well.
For those of you in North Carolina, my good friend folk singer Bruce Piephoff will play at the Southern Lights Bistro in his hometown of Greensboro, NC, on Nov. 29 and Dec. 4; I'm not sure if he has ever written a song about reptiles.
Today, we continue with the mighty alligator, which can be found from North Carolina to Florida here in United States. Initially, we were going to post an entry for crocodiles, which were the subject of a kitschy, but catchy Elton John song "Crocodile Rock."
But, we couldn't find a good image of Gustave, the notorious man-eating croc in the central African nation of Burundi to use. Gustave, who has reportedly devoured some 300 people, perhaps some of whom were photographers, was mentioned in a "Mental Floss" article about Burundi within the last year.
That same magazine said that 9:30 a.m. was the best time to post blog entries. It's actually 9:30 p.m. here on the east coast, but it is that time in Beijing, China, right now. Perhaps, it's that time in Hong Kong too.
The Crocodiles are also the nickname of the Turkish soccer team Bursaspor, located in Bursa, Turkey, in western Turkey; the city is Turkey's fourth largest. This weekend the Crocs' tied Istanbul powerhouse Besiktash 3-3. I suppose taking photographs of the game is less risky than sneaking up on Gustave.
As for alligators, if one is in St. Augustine, Fla., then one can visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, which is open from 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Election Day by the #s- Ok, Maybe This Was a Bad Idea
First of all, we salute our veterans today on Veteran's Day. I am particularly remembering my late stepfather Donald Sullivan (1918-2003) who served in the European theater in World War II. He sure is missed.
When we started this project of tallying Election Day results, we had no idea how involved we would get in the process, and our efforts have seemingly not paid off, as we have received very few hits. But, perhaps there is someone in Singapore who wants to know how swing states, like Nevada, Colorado and Florida voted. And, hopefully, for that particular person, this information is beneficial.
Here are the numbers:
50.9- Percentage Mitt Romney got in Jefferson County (Martinsburg), West Virginia
46.9- Percentage for President Barack Obama in Jefferson County, W.Va, the jurisdiction he came closest to winning in the Mountaineer State.
106- The number of votes that Obama won by in the City of Winchester, Va.
51.2- Percentage of the vote that Obama got in the City of Staunton, Va.
61.3- Percentage that Romney got in rural Floyd County, Va.
68.3- Percentage Obama got in Santa Cruz County, Ariz., his highest in a state that went red.
76.6- Percentage Romney got in rural Yuma County, Colo., a state that went blue
55.4- Percentage Obama got in Pueblo County, Colo.
64.6- Percentage Cong. Jim Moran (D-Va.) got in his re-election bid
61- Percentage that Cong. Gerry Connelly (D-Va) got in his re-election bid; Cong. Bobby Scott (D-Va) is other Democratic congressional representative from Virginia, which has eight Republican members of the house.
94.4-Percentage that Cong. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), the house minority leader got in his re-election bid; he is the only Democrat from South Carolina on the Hill.
90.4- Percentage that Romney got in Cimmaron County, Oklahoma, one of three states where he won every county.
58.2- Percentage Romney got in Salt Lake County, Utah, the most progressive part of the Beehive State
49.8- Percentage Obama got in Sandusky County, Ohio, a vital swing district
47.9- Percentage Romney got in Sandusky County, Ohio
75.2- Percentage Romney got in Elko County, Nevada- a state that went blue.
54.7- Percentage Obama got in Teton County, Wyoming, the lone county he won in that state.
59.5- Percentage Romney got in York County (Rock Hill), SC, which is a Charlotte, NC-suburb
63- Number of votes Obama won by in Clark County, Iowa
50- Percentage for Obama in Bucks County, Penn., a county Romney campaigned in two days before the election.
49.8-Percentage Romney got in Bucks County, Penn.
344- Number of votes Romney won by in rural Dinwiddie County, Va. (near Petersburg)
148- Number of votes Romney won by in Van Buren County, Mich.
83- Percentage of Puerto Rican vote that went to Obama in Florida.
48-Percentage of Cuban vote in Florida for Obama, an all-time high for a Democratic candidate

Monday Night Post-Debate Tweets: Triumph the Comic Insult Dog Wins Debate
Tomorrow morning, we are hoping to post an entry dedicated to the 24 countries mentioned in the foregin policy debate from Boca Raton, Fla., tonight (12 countries on each of our two blogs). But, for right now, we have lots and lots of tweets to get to.
Before we do that, the first image is of far right political figure Sarah Palin; the former Alaskan governor was John McCain's running mate in 2008. The Second figure is a game of chess. And, the third is of Conan O'Brien's Triumph the Comic Insult Blog. The BBC says some 10 million tweets have been tweeted. They further report that folks in Colombia were disappointed that Latin America wasn't discussed more. Of course, how this debate will impact voters in swing towns like Akron (Ohio), High Point (North Carolina) and Reno (Nevada) remains to be seen.
Here are the tweets:
1) @JoshuaGreen (Joshua Green is a columnist for "The Boston Globe"): "Haha, Palin's trashing both candidates on Fox News in hapless, tongue-tied signature style."
2) @CrowleyTime (Michael Crowley, a reporter for "Time" who has also written for "The New Republic and "Rolling Stone"): "The Iraq exchange was confusing but I think Obama got away with pretending he's glad we're fully out when that really wasn't actually his policy."
3) @GregMitch (Greg Mitchell is a blogger for "The Nation," a liberal journal): "Disgusting how so many pundits ignore national security and only care how worker in Ohio reacts on economy."
4) @Chris_Moody (Chris Moody is a reporter for Yahoo News): "Not joking; both Pauly Shore and Triumph the Insult Dog are in debate spin room tonight."
5) @AlexMacGillis (Alex MacGillis a contributor to "The New Republic"): "Actually think it's a bit unfair to judge challenger against POTUS on foreign policy stuff. But, Romney was more anxious than previously."
6) @LailaLalami (Laila Lalami is a contributor to "The Nation"): "If Romney loses the election, he can always become a 'Hair for Men' model! Wait no. He'll buy the company and ship the jobs overseas."
7) @ariannahuff (Arianna Huffington, the founder of The Huffington Post): "Wouldn't have predicted that North Mall would get more mentions than Europe."
8) @citizencohn (Jonathan Cohn is a columnist for "The New Republic"): "GOP post-debate spin: Sure Obama won on points. But his aggressive posture proves that he was losing."

Dexter Trivia (4 of 4)_ How Far Is Omaha from Miami?
For the first time in a long while, we are posting an entry at a peak time (between 9:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.), but we are going with trending topics, such as Katie Holmes and Big Bird, though we hope arbitrarily mentioning both of them inflates our numbers. Of course, we are amazed how Mitt Romney who acted as obnoxious as Bill O'Reilly is the perceived winner of last night's debate in Denver.
Alas, we were unable to find a cool Dexter lunchbox image, but this one will do just as well, we hope.
In episode 67 from the 6th season, Dexter embarks on a road trip to Nebraska. So, we are asking how far is Omaha, Neb., from Miami, where the show is set. Obviously Miami, Okl., a small town near Kansas, would be a quicker driver than one to Miami, Fla., from the Cornhusker State.
So, is the answer?:
A) 1,641 miles
B) 1,651 miles
C) 1,661 miles
D) 1, 671 miles

Weekend Tweets Log_ Happy 52nd Birthday, Scott Baio
We are posting some tweets that we saw on Twitter between 1:30-2:30 p.m. east coast time today. First let's us explain the above images: 1) We thought we'd go with an image of two "Happy Days" characters Joanie and Chachi to go along with a tweet from the PBS' documentary series and because Scott Baio is turning 52 today; 2) We are going with one of the two Ernest Hemingway books I've read (and, I have a degree in English) in honor of the National Book Festival, happening this weekend in Washington, DC,; 3) an image of two British kids enjoying a game of soccer. We are being a bit ironic here as Liverpool faces Manchester United tomorrow, and we expect to be a rowdy crowd. In fact, according to the BBC, security measures have been upgraded for the game.
Here are the tweets:
1) @frontlinepbs ("Frontline"): "A HS dropout will end up costing taxpayers an average of $292K over a lifetime."
2) @TheWriterMag ("The Writer Magazine"): "#TheNatBookFest is a powerful and inspiring mix of genders, genres, generations and cultures. One nation under books!"
3) @libraryofcongress (Library of Congress): "More than 500 @JWLWDC volunteers @NatBookFest! Thanks to this good and loyal group and happy 100th anniversary!"
4) @liverpool (Liverpool FC): "Liverpool v. Man Utd. Predictions please......?"
5) @CoryBooker (Newark, NJ's mayor Cory Booker, who spoke at the Democratic Convention): "We just landed in Tampa. The Garden State meets the Sunshine State, a great combination!"
6) @MayorMarkK (Chapel Hill, NC's mayor Mark Kleinschmidt who attended the Democratic Convention): "let's be responsible out there @ChapelHillPD #ChapelHillPD will step up enforcement of alcohol laws for UNC v. ECU football on Sat." (At last check, UNC was winning the game 7-3).
7) @Gamecocksonline (South Carolina Gamecocks Athletics): "Fans cheer as palyers at Williams Brice Stadium. Go #Gamecocks." (At last report, the 'cocks were tied 0-0 in their home football game against Missouri."
As it turns out, Scott Baio is associated with many terms in the Urban Dictionary. They are a bit too explicit for National Public Radio, so if interested, we suggest you go to this link: http://www.urbandictionary.com

Pre-Convention Tweets from Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC
One ironic thing we found out while putting this together is that the Carolina Panthers, the football team for Charlotte, NC, the city hosting the Democratic National Convention (DNC) will be playing their first game on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa, Fla., is the city that hosted the Republican National Convention, which ended with Mitt Romney's platform speech on Thursday night.
But, today, we are posting tweets from earlier this afternoon regarding the DNC in Charlotte. The images above are of: 1) James Taylor, the folk/adult contemporary singer will be performing at the DNC on Thursday; Taylor is a North Carolina native. 2) The donkey is the traditional mascot of the Democratic Party and 3) a cheerleader for the Carolina Panthers.
Here are the tweets:
1. @DavidCornDC (David Corn, a liberal journalist who works for "Mother Jones"): Already time for another convention. Anyone have any suggestions what to do in Charlotte tonight?
2. @BuzzFeedAndrew (Andrew Laczynski): Occupy Protestors of DNC Banks got bailed out. Charlotte got sold out. Remind me again what stadium the DNC is in.
3. @karentravers (Karen Travers): 10 copies of Sunday NY Times at 7-11 near my Charlotte airport hotel. I can't even find it in Northwest DC sometimes! Well done Queen City!
4. @TheClothier (William Wilson): 90% of the population of Uptown Charlotte are police officers. I've never felt so safe, yet so trapped.
5. @ChuckTodd (Chuck Todd, a White House correspondent for NBC News): In place on floor of Charlotte Convention, will be doing a quick report on gender battleground state politics for @meethepress.
6. @debprice50 (Deb Price, a right-wing Tea Party activist): Obama campaign says it will fill football stadium for convention finale....yeah...right.
7. @LOLGOP (A satirical pro-Democrat tweeter): Silence has asked Mitt Romney to stop using its stuff at his rallies.

The Republicans Are Coming! The Republicans Are Coming!
Since this Shark Week on the Discovery Channel here in the United States, and the Republican Party National Convention will be starting on Monday, Aug. 27th in Tampa, Fla., we thought we'd make fun of our friends on the right. Of course, not all of them are as radical, fringe as Michele Bachmann, but then again, quite a few of them are indeed like sharks, and we don't mean the nice, friendly sharks one sees in the comic strip "Sherman's Lagoon."
As of today, many right-wingers are skewing Vice President Joe Biden for controversial remarks he made in Danville, Va., a town I'm a bit familiar with, in which he told a largely African-American audience that the Republicans would put them back in chains. The right immediately saw this as a reference to slavery. Biden also thought Danville is in North Carolina, but when college basketball season comes along, many residents in Danville pretend they are in the Tarheel State as well (for those of you in Dubai, the University of North Carolina and Duke University, both in North Carolina, are national powerhouses in the sport).
Of course, the partisan party faithful will be more likely to get excited if they see Chuck Norris as opposed to the likes of Congs. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky), Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), then they will accuse Chevy Chase of having too much power and influence in the Democratic Party.
Then, some convention-attenders may have one too many bourbons and have to call Yellow Cab of Tampa (a real taxi company), and hence miss out on the prayer breakfast the next day.
There have been some folks who are new Republicans like Cong. Artur Davis (R-Ala.), an African-American party who quietly switched sides in June. But, one has to wonder if this is genuine or if Cong. Davis just wants to stay in office as Alabama is a red state even by the South's standards.
And, assuredly, tonight Gov. Mary Fallin (R-Okl) will sleep well tonight having decided to execute an inmate named Michael Hooper last night. We will admit that Hooper's crime, which was the murder of his girlfriend and her two young children was very heinous. But, isn't hypocritical of Fallin and those who proclaim to be fiscal conservative to spend at least one million dollars per execution (according to a 2011 column in "Tulsa World," Oklahoma has not released figures on how much capital punishment costs), not to mention that executions seem to certainly contrast the teachings of Jesus Christ.
But, we look forward to posting several entries about it here and our sister blog "Politics, Culture and Other Wastes of Times" as we include voices ranging from Cenk Uygur, a Current-TV progressive talk show host who used to be a Republican, and Dennis Miller, a comic/talk show host who switched stripes from liberal to conservative. Perhaps, now he even shares a Pabst Blue Ribbon or two with his pal Bill O'Reilly.

Quote of the Day/Week-George Washington
Today's quote of the day comes from George Washington, the first American president. This month we are quoting the first eight American presidents on our two blogs. A quip from the second president John Adams is available on "Politics, Culture and Other Wastes of Time," our sister blog.
We have time constraints and we are very hungry (it's fish taco time), so we will keep in short with just a quote from George Washington, who has a high school named after him in Danville, Va. (and assuredly one hunderd other places) and a university named after him in Washington, D.C. His estate in Mount Vernon, Va., relatively close to Washington, D.C., is open to the public.
Here is the quote from the man on our one dollar bills, which reminds me that through the web site http:wheresgeorge.com, I was able to discover that my bill had originated quite a ways down the highway from me, in the city of Jacksonville, Fla.:
"Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company."
And, thanks to those of you in places like Mumbai, India, for checking in with us today.

Bonus Road Trip (7 of 10) Clemson, SC, to the Orange Bowl

On Jan. 4, 2012, the Clemson Tigers, who for some reason had the Virginia Tech Hokies' number this season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (the Tigers were the only team to beat the Hokies; they did it twice) will go down to Miami, Fla., for the Orange Bowl.
The opposing team will be the West Virginia Mountaineers, a former rival of the Hokies, representing the Big East Conference.
The trip from the West Virginia University campus to Miami is an extensive 17 hours, 45 minute-drive, but the commute is slightly less painful from Clemson, SC.
To see the mileage between the two destinations, we chose the Friends Cafe, a hookah gathering place, in Clemson, and the Rice House of Kabob, a Middle Eastern eatery in Miami.
So, how long is the drive between Clemson, SC, and Miami, Fla?; is the answer:
A) 10 hours
B) 11 hours
C) 12 hours
D) 13 hours
E) 14 hours
SIDEBAR ONE: The NPR radio show "Way with Words" recently had a segment on very, very long titles, and we saw that this book was recently promoted on Book TV (
C-SPAN 2): "Throw Them All Out: How Politicians and Their Friends Get Rich Off Insider Stock Tips, Land Deals, and Cronyism That Would Send the Rest of Us to Prison" by Peter Schweizer.
SIDEBAR TWO: Stephen King fans who have either read "Tommyknockers" or seen the TV moive version where a man gets killed by flying Coke cans from a vending machine will be happy to know that according to "Wired" magazine, the actual odds of dying from a vending machine accident are about 1 in 112 million.

Quote of the Day/Week- Fidel Castro

Because of the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and many older Cuban-Americans' desire to rid the world of him, many Cuban-Americans (yes, there are exceptions) lean right, but their vote will not matter in Sioux City, Iowa. And, perhaps, with the latest field of Republicans, which includes the ardent right-winger Newt Gingrinch, many Cuban-Americans might just go with President Barack Obama next year. Well, we can hope.
For our friends in Uzbekistan, it should be pointed out that most Cuban-Americans live around Miami, Florida.
In no way are we endorsing Fidel Castro or his view of the world, but he has been known to give great quotes:
"Men do not shape destiny; destiny produces the man for the hour."
IN THE WHOOPS DEPT- this was meant for the other blog; oh well.

Road Trip USA (1 of 20)- Take the Long Way Home

Today, we start our first of many outings right here from the comfort of our desk in the hamlet of Toms Brook, Va. (a real place, but not where we really are at the moment), with a look at just how long it would take a driver to get from the Coffee Plantation in Key West, Fla., to Mayor Douglas Issacson's office at the North Pole, Alaska, City Pole.
A good deal of the trek would actually go through western Canadian cities like Winnipeg and Edmonton, and assuredly, it would take a very, very long time.
So, we are giving you a chance to guess just how long it would take if you drove directly without taking photographs of horses as you drove through Kentucky.
The answer is either:
a) 87 hours and 25 minutes
b) 85 hours and 20 minutes
c) 83 hours and 15 minutes
d) 81 hours and 50 minutes
While researching this entry, we found out that Jimmy Buffett (don't forget the second 't') who is the famous resident of Key West will be performing in Raleigh on April 19 and in Charlotte on April 21.
SIDEBAR: Speaking of road trips, the Roanoke, Va., carpooling group Ride Solutions is sponsoring a screening of the 1986 good/bad movie "Maximum Overdrive" that was based on something Stephen King wrote. In the film, which was among the first major studio films to be shot in Wilmington, NC, Emilio Estevez battles an 18-wheeler that comes to life because of a comet. The film will be shown at The Shadowbox Cinema in Roanoke on Feb. 21 at 8:00 p.m. Admission is five dollars.

Things We Learned on Twitter Today- The Last Words of Angel Diaz

The case of Angel Diaz, who was 55 when executed on Dec. 13, 2006, made national headlines because the lethal injection process required a second dose that caused the execution to take a staggering 34 minutes. Jeb Bush was the governor of Florida at the time.
Diaz was sentenced to death for murdering Miami topless bar owner Jospeh Nasy in 1979, a crime which he denied up until his last moments of life.
The anti-death penalty site Last Words of the Executed tweeted a portion of Diaz's statement on that night.
We make no secret on this blog of our opposition to capital punishment, but without getting into the politics of the delicate matter, and we certainly sympathize for those who have lost loved ones due to homicide, here is that statement from Diaz:
"The state of Florida is killing an innocent person. The state of Florida is committing a crime, because I am innocent. The death penalty is not only a form of vengeance, but also a cowardly act by humans. I'm sorry for what is happening to me and my family because of this."
And, this will in all likelihood be our last blog entry of the year!

Top 10 Most Controversial Songs of All-Time

Guns N Roses seems to be a band that gets put on a lot of controversial Top Ten lists when it comes to music though the politically-minded progressive rock legends The Clash appear to be forgotten/neglected by those folks putting such lists together though their 1979 song "London Calling" caused quite a stir in the UK.
Today, we feature a Top Ten Most Controersial Songs list compiled by top-10list.org
The late '80s song "Dear God" by XTC is a personal favorite. The lead singer of the band whose name I should know said that some radical evangelical Christian threatened to resort to violent measures if a radio station in his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla., didn't quit playing the song. I imagine today that guy is head of the Florida Tea Party.
Here is the list:
1. "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen
2. "Used to Love Her" by Guns N Roses (pictured)
3. "Kim" by Eminem
4. "Cop Killer" by Blood Count
5. "F*** the Police" by NWA
6. "God Save the Queen" by The Sex Pistols
7. "Darling Nikki" by Prince
8. "If U Seek Amy" by Britney Spears
9. "Dear God" by XTC
10. "Suicide Solution" by Ozzy Osbourne

Things We Learned on Twitter Today- Angelina Condemns Koran Burning Project

It may not be often that a liberal movie star like Angelina Jolie would agree with a leading member of the U.S. military brass like Gen. David Patraeus, but they are on the same page when it comes to being against the Rev. Terry Jones' dubious plans to burn copies of the Koran at his radical church in Gainesville, Fla., this weekend.
Jones has said that he is going to burn the Korans to protest Sept. 11th even though virtually the entire Muslim world, including an imam from Iznik, Turkey, who I spoke while visiting his historic village just days after the terrorist attacks, condemned the events of 9-11.
"The Gainesville Sun" (gainesville.com) tweeted that the star of "Salt" was agast with the news of Jones' proposition.
Jolie, 35, said the following to members of the media about the Koran burning project in Islamabad, Pakistan, where she is visiting after a trip to nothwest Pakistan where the movie star talked to refugees of the recent horrific flooding that occured in that region:
"I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody's religious book."
Jolie's trip is part of her mission as a goodwill ambassador for The United Nations' refugee agency. The U.N. has issued a $460 million pledge to help the flood victims.
The Koran burning project, which has also been condemned by Vatican officials, has been the buzz of Twitter and other chatrooms/discussion boards.
On Twitter, Nathan Tabor, a Christian conservative activist in Winston-Salem, NC, asked his followers on Twitter if they thought the Koran burning project was a good idea or not.
The film critic Roger Ebert, also on Twitter, compared Rev. Jones to Satan for his actions.
I will simply add my two cents and say that as the son of a Muslim immigrant, I think Rev. Jones is a 'budala,' that's the Turkish word for idiot.
Rev. Jones is with the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, which contrary to its name is not a progressive religious organization. His efforts also come as Muslims around the world are concluding the month-long Ramadan holiday.
Ironically, the actor Terry Jones, as a member of Monty Python, appeared in the highly controversial 1979 satire film "Life of Brian," which was considered to be blasphemous by many Christian groups at the time.

PSA- Kids Study for Your Exams.....

For today's Thursday PSA entry, we focus on exams. Now we fully realize that one may ask: "But, Mr. G why are you posting this now in late July? Schools are like closed now, aren't they?"
Well, there is this thing called summer school. And, my fellow instructors at Daytona Beach Community College (ok, now where I work, but there is such a place!) are indeed giving out exams right now!
This brings us to our image which is from the tv series "Welcome Back Kotter," which ran on ABC from 1975-79. John Travolta was in the mostly young cast which included Gabe Kaplan as Mr. Kotter.
There were 95 episodes of the series which took place at the fictional James Buchanan High School in Brooklyn.
Hopefully, those of you burdened with summer school were able to pass your exams!
