Wow! We are still recovering from the Belgium-USA World Cup game that was won 2-1 in extra time by the Land of Tintin, though Team America saw goal-keeper Tim Howard save a World Cup record 16 saves.
Amazingly enough, there is one player_Jermain Jones_ on the American roster who plays for Istanbul powerhouse Besiktash whereas there are no American players from the current World Cup team from D.C. United.
There is also a Greek player in Theofanis Gekas who plays for the Turkish team Konyaspor.
Two of the players on this list are from the Cameroon national team which is embroiled in a match-fixing scandal regarding their 4-1 loss to Croatia, but neither of the two players listed here have been cited.
Here is our list of international players who played pro soccer in Turkey as of the 2013-14 season:
1). Pierre Webo. 32. Fenerbahce. Cameroon.
2) Jermaine Jones. 32. Besiktash. USA. (pictured top)
3) Wesley Sneijder. 30. Galatasaray. Netherlands.
4) Didier Drogba. 36, Galatasaray. Ivory Coast
5) Aurelien Chedjov. 33. Galatasaray. Cameroon.
6) Dirk Kuyt. 33. Fenerbahce. Netherlands. (pictured midle)
7) Sol Bamba. 29. Ivory Coast. Trabzonspor.
8) Fernando Muslera. 28. Uruguay. Galatasaray (plays goal-keeper)
9) Theofanis Gekas. 34. Greece. Konyaspor (pictured bottom)
10) Emmanuel Emenike. 27. Nigeria. Fenerbahce.
11) Izet Hajrovic. 22. Bosnia. Galatasaray.

Futbol Notebook: All Three Istanbul Powerhouses Win in Weekend Domestic Play
Greetings to our blog-readers in Austria, Azerbaijan and Colombia.
Tonight, as Galatasaray prepares to head to Spain for a UEFA battle with Real Madrid, we reflect back on weekend domestic play in the SuperLiga which had some interesting headlines, especially in the Galatasary-Sivasspor match, but no major surprises as all three Istanbul powerhouses and perennial contender Trabzonspor all won their respective games.
We start with Fenerbahce, one of the three Istanbul power teams, had a fairly competitive 2-1 win over Antalyaspor on the road in Antalya, Turkey's largest resort city. For the Yellow Canaries, goals from Pierre Webo (Cameroon) and Moussa Sow (Senegal). The lone goal for the home team also came from an African player as Lamine Diarra (Senegal) scored.
The lone goal in Trabzonspor's 1-0 home win over Eskisehirpsor came from Paulo Henrique (pictured bottom, Brazil) in the 74th minute of play.
One of our favorite teams Bursaspor tied 1-1 at home in Bursa with Kasimpasha, the fourth team from Istanbul in the Superliga, with the home field Crocs' getting a goal from Sebastian Pinto (Chile) while another South American player Ezequiel Scarionne (Argentina) scored for the visitors.
Georges Mandjeek (Cameroon) scored the lone goal in Kayseri Ericyesspor's 1-0 home win over Ankara G.B.
There were four red cards issued in Galatasaray's home win in Istanbul over Sivasspor, including three from the visitors from Sivas, a city in northeast Turkey. But, the game did see Turkish star Burak Yilmaz (pictured top) kick in his 100th career in the 13th minute of play. We have to thank our good friend Ahmet Bob Turgut for filling us in on that.
The third Istanbul powerhouse Besiktas had a relatively easy home win over Konyaspor 3-1.
Here are the scores:
Besiktas 3 Konyaspor 1
Anatlyaspor 1 Fenerbahce 2
Trabzonspor 1 Eskisehirspor 0
Akhisar 0 Karabuk 1
Gazinantepspor 3 Elazigspor 1
Kayseri Erciyesspor 1 Ankara G.B. 0
Bursaspor 1 Kasimpasha 1 (tie)
Rizespor 0 Kayserispor 2
Galatasaray 2 Sivasspor 1

Futbol Notebook: A Turkish Guy Named Jimmy???
With the images of Portugal international Jose Bosingwa (pictured top), who got a red card over the weekend, who plays for Trabzonspor and Jimmy Durmaz (pictured middle) a Swedish international with Turkish citizenship, who kicked the winning goal for Ankara Genclerbirligi, over Trabzonspor, we are informing soccer fans around the world of the goings-on in Turkish soccer.
Unlike our good friend Ahmet Bob Turgut, we don't blog about Turkish soccer every week, but the giant match between Istanbul powerhouses Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, which resulted in a 2-0 win for the Yellow Canaries from Fenerbahce, we thought this would be a good week for an entry on Turkish soccer.
The two goals for Fenerbahce, who played on the Asian side of Istanbul, whereas Galatasaray plays on the European side of the Bosporus, came from Turkish international Emre Belozoglu in the 23rd minute. In the second half, a second goal from Brazilian player Cristian Baronir in the 66th minute.
This was a tough week for Galatasaray as they lost to Copenhagen 1-0, thus Didier Drogba, the heart and soul of the team wasn't able to produce a goal and neither was his team.
The other Istanbul powerhouse Besiktas scored a 3-0 win over Kayserispor, but in spite of their win over the team from Kayersi, in central Anatolia, the Eagles' Matta Roman, a Brazilian international. got a red card in the second half.
It was also a good for Sivaspor, a team from Sivas, in northwest Turkey, which beat our beloved Bursaspor 2-1 thanks to two goals from Aatif Chahechouche, of Morocco; Bursaspor got a goal from another African continental player as Taye Taiwo of Nigeria scored the lone goal for the crocodiles (yes, we don't think there are any crocs in Turkey either), which reminds us that if any blog readers are contemplating a trip to the central African country of Burundi to photograph Gustave the man-eating crocodile, perhaps it's just best to say home and watch futbol and "Doctor Who"!
Here are the results from Week 11 of Turkish domestic soccer play:
Fenerbahce 2 Galatasaray 0
Ankara Genclerbirligi 3 Trabzonspor 2
Kayserispor 0 Besiktas 3
Sivasspor 2 Bursaspor 1
Konyaspor 0 Antalyaspor 2
Kasimpasha 3 Gaziantepspor 0
Karademir Karabuk 2 Rizespor 1
Eskisehirspor 2 Akhisar G.K. 0
Elazigspor 0 Kayseri Erciyespor 1
Currently, Fenerbahce is winning the league with 28 points, ahead of Kasimpasa (24 points), Sivasspor (22 pts) and BJK (21 pts).
Turkish national player Deniz Turuc, who is also a Dutch citizen, plays for the Dutch team Go Ahead Eagles, to find out how they fared in domestic play, go to our sister blog http://www.politicscultureandotherwastesoft.blogspot.com

Soccer Week (6 of 8): Turkish Soccer Game Sees Seven Goals
Ali Adnan Kerim, who goes by Ali Adnan (pictured), is an Iraqi player who is a rising star in the Turkish Premiere. Kerim, who is known as the 'Asian Gareth Bale' scored one of five goals for Rziespor, located in the tea mecca of Rize, in the 12th minute of play. His Turkish teammate Sercan Kaya added two goals, including the game-winning penalty kick in the 80th minute, for Rizespor's electrifying 5-2 win over Gaziantepspor.
Sivasspor, located in the northwestern city of Sivas, defeated Eskisehirspor, located in Eskisehir, a western city where meerschaum pipes are made, by a 3-2 score. The game-winner for the Sivas side came from Moroccan player Aatif Chahechouhe, who somehow didn't make our players with long, long names list, in the 73rd minute of play.
Here are the complete results from Week 4 in the TPL and (Spoiler Alert!), we have some UEFA Champions League scores, including how GalataSaray, a traditional Istanbul powerhouse, fared at home against Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid.
Here are the Turkish domestic scores from weekend (actually Friday-Monday) play:
GalataSaray 1 Antalyaspor 1 (tie)
Erciyes Kayseri 1 Akihisar 0
Gaziantepspor 2 Rizespor 5
Trabzonspor 1 Karabukspor 0 (Goal came from Brazilian Paulo Henrique in 76th minute)
Ankara Genclerbirligi 1 Kayseri 1 (tie)
Sivasspor 3 Eskisehir 2
Bursaspor 0 Besiktash (Istanbul) 3
Elazig 2 Konyaspor 0
Kasimpasha (IST) 2 Fenerbahce (IST) 3
Here are some UEFA Champion League scores:
It was a good day for Cristiano Ronaldo, as he scored a hat trick, in Istanbul in Real Madrid's 6-1 win over GalataSaray. But, it was not a good day for Greek team Olympiacos as they fell at home in Piraeus (a city outside Athens) to French powerhouse Paris St. Germain by a 4-1 score with two goals (scored within minutes of each other) by French player Thiago Motta.
Here is the complete UEFA Scoreboard:
Manchester United 4 Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) 2
Sociedad (Spain) 0 Shktar Donetsk (Ukraine) 2*
Benefica (Portugal) 2 Anderecht (Belgium) 0
Plzen (Czech Rep.) 0 Manchester City 3
GalataSaray 1 Real Madrid 6
Olympiacos 1 PSG 4
Bayern Munich 3 CSKA Moscow 0
Copenhagen 1 Juventus 1 (tie)
*- Shakthar Donestsk's win was considered the upset of the day. Brazilian player Alex Teixeira scored both goals in the victory. This team is not to be confused with Shakter Karagandy, a team from Kazakhstan, which will play in the Europa League on Thursday.

Soccer Week (4 of 8): Players with Very Very Long Lastnames
Who is this Greek soccer player who plays for the Greek league team Panathinaikos? Well, you will have to find out by scrolling below because we don't want to try to spell his name twice.
We only needed to look a few European (UEFA) leagues to come up with this list. Among those who were eliminated from contention because of long surnames that were simply not long enough was Turkish soccer Gokhan Deirmeci of Kayserispor, a team that plays its games in Kayseri, Turkey.
Here are some last names you probably will not envy, but then again not all of us can be as luck as Dr. Mehmet Oz (Dr. Oz......yes, that is his real last name, and most Turkish names, including our very own Tilly Gokbudak's are longer than that):
1. Jakub Blaszcykowski (Polish player with Bayern Leverkusen in Germany)
2. Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Greek player with Schalke 'O4 in Germany)
3. Konstantinos Triantafylloppoulos (Greek player with Panathinaikos in Greece; he is the mystery player who is pictured.......you see why I'm only spelling his name once!) *
4. Stefanos Kragiopoulos (Greek player with Iraklis in Greece)
5. Adrian Mierzejewski (Polish player with Trabzonspor in Turkey)
6. Oguz Daglaroglu (Turkish player with Akhisar Belediyespor in Turkey)
7. Tigran Gharabaghtsyan (Armenian player with Ararat Yerevan in Armenia)
8. Rey Mammadbayli (Azeri player with AZAL PFK in Azerbaijan)
9. Shimon Abudhatzira (Israeli player with Maccabi Haifa in Israel)
10. Sergei Parshivlyuk (Rusian player with Spartak Moscow, we almost didn't get his name right!)
11. Aleksandr Ryazanatsev (Russian player with Rubin Kazan in Russia)

Soccer Week (1 of 8): Games to Watch in Mediterranean Countries
This is the first entry in our first ever Soccer Week series (we were originally going to call it Futbol Week). For this entry, we look at ten games being played in Mediterranean countries. Alas, we didn't have room for Portugal or Israel. But, we do feature France, Turkey, Greece, Italy and Spain in this preview of what one might call dev machlar (giant games) in Turkish.
The three images above are of: 1) Pablo Batalla*, an Argentine international who is a star player for Bursaspor in Turkey; 2) Didier Digard who is a French international and a captain for OGC Nice in France and 3) Manolis Moniakis who has a short name (by Greek standards) the defender and Greek international plays for OFI Crete in Greece.
We hoped to provide you with the start times (as they would be in New York), but we realized that would cause much confusion. Keep in mind that Madrid and Paris are six hours ahead of New York and that Istanbul and Athens are seven hours ahead of Boston. Most games are played when it is morning or early afternoon in Baltimore or Tampa; we hope to provide you with the scores of these games on Monday:
Turkey:
Sun. Bursapor vs. Besiktash (Istanbul)
Mon. Kasimpasha (Istanbul) vs. Fenerbahce (Istanbul)
France:
Sun. Lille vs. OCG Nice
Sun. Lyon vs. Rennes
Greece:
Sat. Veria vs. PAOK (Thessaloniki)
Sat. OFI Crete vs. Astera Tripolis (Tripoli)
Spain:
Sat. Villareal vs. Real Madrid (this might be the best game in all of Europe)
Sat. Athletico Madrid vs. Almeira
Italy:
Sat. Inter Milan vs. Juventus (Turin) (this might be the best game in Europe as well)
Sat. Napoli vs, Atalanta

Coming This Week (we hope): Futbol Week
If all goes well, we are hoping to launch a seven-week series entitled Futbol Week. Our aim is to post lists, soccer results and perhaps Twitter feeds from soccer experts, such as Turkish soccer enthusiast Ahmet Bob Turgut and Grant Wuhl.
We will also be focusing on specific domestic league, and see how some of you favorite teams, including the Dutch futbol team Go Ahead Eagles (yes, that is their real name) with Turkish international Deniz Turuc (pictured above) who grew up in the Netherlands and Turkish soccer team BursaSpor with Argentine national Pablo Battalla (pictured below) perform as Week 4 gets underway in most UEFA-sanctioned domestic leagues.
Of course, the big news in the soccer world today is that Mesut Ozil, a German international player of Turkish heritage, has signed a 'cok para' (Turkish term for lots of loot) to transfer from Real Madrid to Arsenal.
Ironically, Aresnal ousted Turkish soccer team Fenerbahce from the UEFA playoffs just over a week ago without Ozil's help.

Blogging in 60 Seconds or Less- the Plural for Octopus is..........
We have to keep this entry short as we don't want to be late for our yoga class at Upper Valley Yoga in White River Junction, Vermont, especially since that state is 14 hours away from here.
But, we can leave you with an image of a stuffed animal octopus (we got the idea from Bing, since they used a jellyfish today).
The plural for octopus is either octopi or octopuses.
Assuredly, one can see a real octopus at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland.
And, we are wondering if the descendant of the late Paul the Octopus in Germany, who accurately projected Eskisehir's 2-1 win over Antalyaspor in Turkish soccer over the weekend, is picking DC United in its home MLS game against the Portalnd Timber this weekend.
Ok, we need to get in our Subaru Outback now (that is the unofficial car of Maine, not Vermont, actually).

Soccer Night-Turkey: Ah Those Altintop Twins
Merhabalar to everyone/ Herkese hello demek istedim..... Hmmm....Turkglish is perhaps not a language which is spoken much in the blogosphere, but, well we try to be original.
We made a big (insert English or Turkish obscenity here) goof last week when we said Fenerbahce was playing Swiss team FC Basel in the UEFA Europa League while English powerhouse Chelsea was playing Benefica of Portugal.
In actuality, Chelsea was playing Basel, whom they defeated, and Fenerbahce alas fell to the Portuguese side in Lisbon 3-1, which eradicated the Yellow Canaries' 1-0 win a week prior in Istanbul. Of course, since this blog is based in America (our executive editor Tilly Gokbudak, who is me, is a Turkish-American), we aren't quite sure how the aggregate system works in soccer, and we think there should be a best 2 out of 3 system instead.
Of course, Turkish futbol blogger Ahmet Bob Turgut, one of our favorite people to follow on Twitter, would have never made this mistake.
Before we go into our dated scores from last week, let's explain a few thing, starting with the twins: Hamid Altintop of GalataSaray (formerly with Read Madrid; pictured top) is the twin brother of Halil Altintop of Trabzonspor (pictured bottom). They are both 30. If for some reason, we got the two mixed up, hopefully, Ahmet Bob Turgut will correct us.
And, we have two new scores from today (Saturday): First, Kayseri upset Trabzonspor 2-1, so we image Halil is not in not in a happy mood right now, but hopefully he'll have a great olive and feta cheese Turkish kahvalti/breakfast (it's 7:30 a.m. and Sunday in Turkey as we are writing this).
We found out that Kayseri, a central Turkish team, has Icelandic national Gretar Steninsson, we presume he is one of the few Icelanders in the TPL.
But, our beloved BursaSpor doubled up on struggling OrduSpor 4-2 with two goals from Slovakian Stanislav Sestak.
The logo in the middle is of Sivasspor which beat bottom-dwelling Istanbul BB last week, but tomorrow, they have the daunting task of facing Burak Yilmaz, Didier Drogba and league-leading GalataSaray.
In leagues standings, these are the top four teams:
1. GalataSaray 65
2. FenerBahce 58
3. Besiktash 52
4. Bursaspor 50
And, here are the results from LAST weekend:
1. BursaSpor 1 Akhisar 1, tie
2. Trabzonspor 2 Ankara GB 0
3. Elazig 1 Karabukspor 0
4. Sivasspor 4 Istanbul BB 1
5. Mersin 1 Antalyaspor 1, tie
6. Besiktash 2 OrduSpor 0
7. Fenerbahce 2 Kayseri 1
8. GalataSaray 1 GaziantepSpor 0
9. Eskisehir 2 Kasimpasha 1
We are also going to arbitrarily mention Turkish Airlines in the hopes that they will give us a free plane ticket from JFK (New York) to Istanbul.

Greek Premiere League Soccer Scores
Yes, perhaps, there are not many things as shocking as a Turkish-American blogging about Greek soccer results over the weekend. But, in spite of the Greek-Turkish Cold War which unofficially from 1974 following a war over Cyprus until 1999 when both countries provided mutual relief support to devastating earthquakes within both countries which occurred just a few months apart, relations between the two neighboring countries are apparently at relative ease at the moment.
In fact, Deniz Baykara, a Turkish national, plays for the Greek first division team Panthrakikos, and Theofanis Gekas, a Greek soccer player, is a member of the Turkish first division team Akhisar.
Ironically, it was not a good weekend for either of those clubs as Panthrakikos lost lost to Atromitos 1-0 and conversely Akhisar also lost in their match again Elazigspor by the same score of 1-0.
The above image we are featuring for this entry is of Senegalese national Pape Sow, who kicked a goal for his Panathinikos in the 73rd minute in a 2-0 win over their Athens rival AEK. Sow's teammate Spaniard Vitolo kicked an earlier goal at the 55-minute mark in the win. There are now, in recent years, many Spanish soccer players in Greece, so much so that they were the subject of many international soccer stories last season.
Greek soccer player Nikolaos Kaltsas had a good day on the field as well as he scored two goals in his team Veria's 3-1 win over Aris.
Hungarian national Laszlo Lencse also had two goals to lead his team Asteras Tripolis to a 2-1 win over Giannia.
And, the Thessaolinki powerhouse team PAOK left the field with a 4-2 win over Panionios with crucial goals coming from Albanian player Ergys Kace and Greek player Dimitris Salpingis.
Here is a look at the scoreboard:
Veria 3 Aris 1
Panathinaikos 2 AEK Athens 1
Asteras Tripolis 2 Giannia 1
PAOK 4 Panionios 2
Atromitos 1 Panthrakikos 0
Skoda Xanthi 4 Levadiakos 1
Olymiakos Pireaus 4 OFI Crete 0

Turkish Premiere League Soccer Scores
It has been at least one full year since we last posted Turkish Premiere League Soccer scores, but since today is the 43rd birthday of our executive editor Tilly Gokbudak (who is me), we thought we'd post the scores from this past weekend.
The 'dev mach'/giant game was between two Istanbul powerhouses Besiktash and Fenerbahce; Besiktash won the game 3-2 as Olcay Sahan kicked the game winner in the 93rd minute of play.
Argentinian striker Pablo Battala helped our beloved Crocs from Bursaspor to a 1-0 win over Sivasspor with a goal in the 67th minute in a game that was played on Sunday, as was the dev mach.
But, the weekend's most exciting game may have well been the shoot-out between Antalyaspor and Gaziantepspor. Antalyaspor won the game 5-2 with Nigerian Isaac Promise kicking the go ahead goal in the 37th minute which made the game 3-2, that turned out to be the goal winner. Omer Sismanoglu, whose last name actually means 'fat boy' in Turkish scored in the 82nd minute for Antalyaspor in the seventh and final goal of the game.
In another wild one, Samil Cinaz kicked the game-winner for Orduspor in a 3-2 triumph over Karabukspor in the 73rd minute.
Here are the scores:
Besiktash 3 Fenerbahce 2
Antalyaspor 5 Gaziantepspor 2
Galatasaray 0 Eskisehirspor 0
Bursaspor 1 Sivasspor 0
Orduspor 3 Karabukspor 2
Kayseri 2 Mersin 1
Elazigspor 1 Akhisar 0
Kasimpasa 2 Trabzonspor 0
Ankara Genclerbirligi 0 Istanbul BB 0

Reptile Week Cont'd_ The Alligators
Yesterday, we started with the turtles. We forgot to mention that the Minnesota-based folk/rock band Trampled By Turtles will be performing in Buffalo, NY, at the Town Ballroom and The Port City Music Hall in Portland, Maine, on Dec. 2, in addition to their show at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio. The band plays many other days in the northeast during that interval as well.
For those of you in North Carolina, my good friend folk singer Bruce Piephoff will play at the Southern Lights Bistro in his hometown of Greensboro, NC, on Nov. 29 and Dec. 4; I'm not sure if he has ever written a song about reptiles.
Today, we continue with the mighty alligator, which can be found from North Carolina to Florida here in United States. Initially, we were going to post an entry for crocodiles, which were the subject of a kitschy, but catchy Elton John song "Crocodile Rock."
But, we couldn't find a good image of Gustave, the notorious man-eating croc in the central African nation of Burundi to use. Gustave, who has reportedly devoured some 300 people, perhaps some of whom were photographers, was mentioned in a "Mental Floss" article about Burundi within the last year.
That same magazine said that 9:30 a.m. was the best time to post blog entries. It's actually 9:30 p.m. here on the east coast, but it is that time in Beijing, China, right now. Perhaps, it's that time in Hong Kong too.
The Crocodiles are also the nickname of the Turkish soccer team Bursaspor, located in Bursa, Turkey, in western Turkey; the city is Turkey's fourth largest. This weekend the Crocs' tied Istanbul powerhouse Besiktash 3-3. I suppose taking photographs of the game is less risky than sneaking up on Gustave.
As for alligators, if one is in St. Augustine, Fla., then one can visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, which is open from 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Saturday Morning Tweets_ Picking Up Those Pesky Pennies
It's been a long time since we talked about Turkish soccer, but we learned today that our beloved Bursaspor, a team nicknamed the crocodiles even though Gustave the notorious man-eating croc' lives a long way from Turkey in the central African country of Burundi, tied Istanbul powerhouse Fenerbahce 1-1.
Here is a look at some tweets we have digested (yes, that is a nudge to Gustave) from the 11:00 a.m. hour (New York time, which seven hours behind Bursa and Istanbul):
1. @TheMuslimGuy (Arsalan Iftikhar, a progressive Muslim-American): "DC Friends: Sunday night check out my friend comedian Dean Obeidallah @DeanofComedy shows in Wash. DC, will be fun!" (Obeidallah is a Palestinian-American comic, he is pictured top).
2. @current (Current TV): "In Colorado, a ballot initiative to legalize pot is more popular than either Romney or Obama."
3. @FSU_Volleyball (Florida State Seminoles Women's Volleyball, featuring two Turkish student athletes Fatma Yildirim and Duygu Duzceler, this tweet is in reference to their very close win over Georgia Tech last night): "@FSUVolleyball is on the road and headed to Clemson. Thanks everyone for their Twitter love last night! We love our fans."
4. @HuffingtonPost (Huffington Post): "Burger King unleashes pumpkin burger" (pictured, middle).
5. @LOLGOP (LOL GOP): "The other freedom ObamaCare offers is the chance to create your business w/out fear of losing or not being able to afford health care."
6. @neilhimself (Neil Gaiman, a famed fiction writer): "Wife is jogging somewhere."

Image of the Day/Week- Children's Day in Turkey
Until this week, we were unaware that Google puts aside a special image just for Google Turkey users in honor of National Children's Day, which has been celebrated in Turkey on April 23rd since the founding of the Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923.
Ironically, the national holiday is celebrated around a time when people of Armenian heritage around the world target Turkey politically for a highly controversial matter which occurred nearly 100 years ago which we refer to as "The Rashomon Nightmare," a term that neither my fellow Turkish-Americans or Armenian-Americans seem to care for, which means there may very well be logical reasoning for my viewpointhttp://www.ataa..orghttp://www.turkishfutbol.blogspot.com.
This year, Enes Karabulut, age 9, was declared 'Kucuck Baskbakan/Little Prime Minister" by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Karabulut headed a delegation of 18 young students from across Turkey who visited Ankara in honor of National Children's Day.
And, like most adult politicians and political leaders, Karabulut may have isolated many people in Turkey by boldly declaring that he wanted to see his favorite soccer team Fenerbahce, an Istanbul powerhouse. win the Turkish soccer championships.
On Sunday, Fenerbahce faces cross-town rivals Besiktash. On Saturday, GalataSaray, also an Istanbul powerhouse and a team I've rooted for since childhood, will face Trabzonspor in the semi-finals of the championship.
This is the very first year that Turkey has held a play-off system to determine the league champion. Interestingly enough, the four teams in the semi-finals are also the four most popular teams in Turkey. In something 'that could only happen in Turkey,' the GalataSaray-Trabzonspor game will be held in front of women and children spectators only.
I suppose the people who made the seemingly futile decision would say that in neighboring Iran women are not allowed to attend soccer games at all.
Incidentally, tonight we are coming to you live from a bowling alley in Bethesda, Maryland*.
*-This is not really where I am, but I enjoy these gags, which has been a tradition of this blog since its founding in 1984.

Quote of the Day/Week- Uma Thurman
Today and this month we are quoting who were born in 1970 as I was. We start with the ever-gorgeous Uma Thurman who turns 42 on April 29th. It has recently been reported in the media that is pregnant with her third child.
Thurman is best-known for her roles in films directed by Quentin Tarantino, including "Pulp Fiction," "Kill Bill, Volume 1" and "Kill Bill, Volume 2."
As one might expect, it was hard to find a good image of Thurman to 'borrow' here as many of them are indeed quite revealing. But, it was also hard to get an image from her films that fit in with the space we have.
Here is her quote, which is indeed very shocking, but for the reasons one might presume:
"Even today, when people tell me I'm beautiful, I don't believe a word of it."
SIDEBAR ONE: Kudos to the men's basketball team from UNC-Asheville, as the team won the Big South Conference title and will now likely play a one or two-seed in the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs (24-9), the top seed in the Big South tournament, defeated the seventh-seeded VMI Keydets 80-64 on its home court. Jeremy Atkins lead all scoring for the Bulldogs with 18 points.
SIDEBAR TWO: Only in Turkey, my late father's country! Two soccer games over the weekend were played in 'front of women and children' only. Soccer hooliganism is rampant in Turkey as it is in neighboring Greece, but yes, even though I'm a Turkish-American, this seems both silly and excessive. Assuredly, everyone in Turkey will defend this exercise even they think it's silly and excessive too.
The results of the two game that were played under these conditions were:
Bursaspor 3 Karabukspor 0
Trabzonspor 2 Besiktas* 1
*- the Istanbul soccer power is pronounced Beshiktash in English.

Sports Desk- GalataSaray 3 Besiktash 2
The Swedish national player Johan Elmander is our poster boy for the day as he kicked in two goals in the 15th and 91st minutes respectively to help Istanbul powerhouse win a crucial home game over arch rival from the other side of the Bosporus with a 3-2 win over Besiktash on Sunday.
Felipe Melo, a Brazilian national, also scored for the yellow and red in the 52 minute.
For the Besiktash (BJK) side Turkish national Ibrahim Toraman scored in the 49th minute. BJK was also helped by an own-goal from GalataSaray's Semih Kaya in the 73rd minute which assuredly horrified the fans at Ali Sam Yen Stadium. Toraman's old team Sivasspor fared slightly better as they came away with a 3-3 over Ankara Genclerbirligi, one of two cities representing the capital city in the league. Their rival Ankaragucu fell to Karabukspor 3-2.
Even without the GS-BJK game, it was a huge weekend in Turkish Premiere League play as two major upsets occurred.
Eskisehir upset Fenerbahce, the third Istanbul powerhouse Fenerbahce 2-1 with goals from Bulent Ertugul (31st minute) and French-Senegalese player DiOmansy Kamara (55). Ironically, the Senegalese star player Moussa sow scored for FB in the team's lone goal during the 75th minute of play.
In spite of a goal from the star Turkish-German player Halil Altintop (his twin brother Hamid Altintop plays for Real Madrid, both players play for Turkey) in the 60th minute, Trabzonspor fell to Mersin Idmanyurdu 3-2. Olcan Aydin scored the other goal for Trabzonspor, while two goals from Mert Nobre and one goal from Hasan Ucuncu helped the team from Mersin pull the upset. Coming into the game, Trabzonspor, a team that is also competing in the UEFA Champions League, wasin fifth and Idmanyurdu was in 11th place in league standings.
Our beloved Crocodiles from BursaSpor won 3-0 over Samsunspor with goals from the popular Argentinian player Pablo Battalla (14th minute) as well as Musa Cagiran (68the min.) and Turgay Bahadir (88th min.).
Gaziantep scored a 2-0 win over Manisa with goals from Muhammet Demir and Cenk Tosun; while Orduspor beat Kayseri 1-0 on a goal from Yalcin Ayhan.
Here are the complete results:
Eskisehirspor 2 Fenerbahce 1
Orduspor 1 Kayseri 0
Karabukspor 3 Ankaragucu 2
Gaziantep 2 Manisa 0
Bursaspor 3 Samsunspor 0
Anakara Genclerbirligi 3 Sivasspor 3, tie
Istanbul BB 4 Antalyaspor 0
Idman Yurdu (Mersin) 3 Trabzonspor 2
GalataSaray 3 BJK 2

Quote of the Day/Week- Halle Berry

Today, in honor of Black History Month, we are quoting actress Halle Berry, 45, who was a model before she became an actress. Berry won an Oscar for "Monster's Ball" (2001), becoming the first African-American to win a Best Actress Oscar.
Amazingly enough, three years later, she won a Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress for her performance in "Catwoman" (2004), a film where she actually injured herself and was briefly hospitalized, and then surprised the world by accepting the dubious award in person.
We were about to say she was the only person to have won both 'honors,' but we remembered (ok, we asked Google) that Sandra Bullock actually won both in the same year!
Here is Berry's quote:
"Beauty is not just skin deep."
SIDEBAR ONE: Tilly Gokbudak, the managing editor of this blog (ok, I just referred to myself in the second person) jokingly tweeted that he would put in the words Yerevan, Liberace and Newt Gingrich (who lost to Mitt Romney in Florida Republican Primary yesterday) so that Google would think he was a 'gay Armenian Republican.'
Well, he actually took this upon himself and in the process he found out through "Yerevan" magazine (a publication actually based in Los Angeles as opposed to the Armenian capital) that Armenian-American playwright Vahe Berberian's** new play "Gyank" opens at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, Calif., on March 16th.
SIDEBAR TWO: Since Tilly Gokbudak is a Turkish-American*, he thought it would also be good to mention that his two favorite Turkish soccer teams Bursaspor, from Bursa, Turkey's fourth largest city, and GalataSaray, a traditional Istanbul powerhouse, played over the weekend.
Surprisingly, the underdog Crocodiles (yes, that is BursaSpor's nickname even though we are fairly certain that if there are any crocs in Turkey, they would be in the Ankara Zoo) beat GalataSaray 1-0 on a goal in the 50th from the team's star Argentinian player Pablo Battalla.
*- For those of you living in a desert island near The Bahamas, Turkey and Armenia have bad relations; we would explain more, but Tilly Gokbudak has an urgent dentist appointment.
**- We almost didn't spell the playwright's last name correctly, but alas we don't expect any friendly emails from ANCA, the main Armenian-American lobbying group because we caught it!

In the News_ American Postage Stamps Increase

On Monday, here in the United States, standard stamps for letters and bills will increase from 44 cents to 45 cents, though most stamps are now 'Forever Stamps," meaning they can be used even if stamp rates increase.
This image above is of the 1997 Marilyn Monroe stamp, which was part of the Legends of Hollywood stamp series.
SIDEBAR: Kudos to soccer star Clint Dempsey for being the first American to score three goals in the English Premiere League. His team Fulham defeated New Castle 5-2 yesterday.
In Turkish soccer, Istanbul powerhouse team Besiktas beat Antalyaspor 2-1 thanks to two goals from Portuguese nationals: Hugo Almeida (63rd min) and Manuel Fernandes (89th min).
Our favorite team in the Turkish league, Bursaspor fell to Sivasspor 2-1, but Argentinian star Pablo Battalla did kick one for the Crocodiles. Interestingly enough, the game-winning goal for Sivasspor, a team from eastern Turkey, came from Azerbaijani national Cihan Ozkara, who I mistook for a Turkish player (names are similar in both countries).
