Greetings to our blog readers in the Netherlands, Argentina, and Burkina Faso....
We will be the first to admit that we should be at the gym in a yoga class or in a public library reading "Esquire," "Mental Floss," or "The Atlantic." But, we are here, and this will mark the 10th and final entry for a series commemorating the tenth anniversary of our blogging practice, which started on Sept. 21, 2005.
Today, we are going with three definition from The Urban Dictionary which have been slightly altered.
Tori Spelling, the former "Beverly Hills 90210" (original show) actress, is pictured here because she is the first woman who came to mind when we heard the term 'hottish.' The second woman who came to mind was Florence Henderson from "The Brady Bunch" (original version). And, the third choice was Sarah Palin (now, we are swimming over our heads).
To find out what that word and the other two urban slang words/terms of the day just keep reading, Angry Birds will be waiting for you when you are finished here:
1) Hottish: Somewhat hot. Although cannot be considered as 'hot,' a person who is hottish is not completely ugly either. (Our apologies to Ms. Spelling)....
2) Donald Trump: Living proof that money simply can not buy good hair.
3) More Issues Than Vogue: When you imply that your amount of issues (personal problems) are greater than the amount of issues of Vogue (the magazine).

Quotes from Off the Beat Path (6 of 6): Alice Cooper
Greetings to our blog-readers in Iceland, The Netherlands, Austria, Ukraine, Israel and Turkey.
We hate snakes (well the poisonous ones and pythons), but that's the case with the American '70s glam rock/heavy metal star Alice Cooper, who will be playing at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, NC, on Oct. 22.
Here is his quote from the singer best known for "School's Out" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy":
"The most joyous times of the year are Christmas mornings and the end of school."

World Cup Soccer Lists (4 of 4): The Names We Will Remember
Wow! We didn't realize that Arjen Robben of The Netherlands and Tim Howard of the United States look like twin brothers! For more info on world soccer, we recommend a true expert Ahmet Bob Turgut:
http://turkeyfootball.blogspot.com/
And, kudos to Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for calling an excellent game yesterday in Argentina's penalty shoot-out win over The Netherlands, but I suspect we will see much more of Robben, who plays for Bayern Munich.
Here is our list:
1) Joel Campbell. 22. Costa Rica. Olympiacos (Greece; pictured top)
2) Arjen Robben. 30. Netherlands. Bayern Munich (pictured center)
3) Tim Howard. 35. USA. Everton (England, pictured bottom,)
4) Marouane Fellaini. 26. Belgium. Manchester U.
5) Thomas Muller. 24. Germany, Bayern Munich
6) Rais Mbolhi. 28. Algeria. CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria, where he plays goal-keeper)
7) Luis Suarze. 27. Uruguay. Liverpool (I guess we can objectively say he is the most scandalous futboler on the planet)
8) Faryd Mondgram. 43. Colombia. (no club team, he is the oldest player ever to play in a World Cup)
9) Xherdan Shaqiri. 22. Switzerland. Bayern Munich.
10) Mathieu Valbuena. 29. France. Marseilles.
11) Angel di Mira. 26. Argentina. Real Madrid.

The World Cup Lists (1 of 4): The Captains
Greetings to our readers in Bangladesh, Turkey and Peru, where assuredly folks are still depressed because their respective nations are not competing in the World Cup, but we are here to cheer you up.
Well, actually, this list may not help_may not help at all in fact.
We begin our long overdue World Cup coverage with a list of 11 players who are captains of their team. Of course, just because one is a captain does not he is the best player. The disgraced soccer version of Bela Lugosi, Uruguay's Luis Suarez, one of the best players in the world, was not the captain for Team Uruguay which will try to defeat Colombia today without him.
Here is our list, good luck to everyone in Brazil:
1) Thiago Silva. Brazil. Age 29. Paris Saint-Germaine (France; pictured top).
2) Giorgis Karagounis. Greece. Age 37. Fulham (England; pictured center)
3) Clint Dempsey. USA. Age 31. Seattle Sounders (MLS/USA; pictured bottom)
4) Robin van Persie. Netherlands. Age 30. Manchester United (England)
5) Hugo Lloris. France. 27. Tottenham Hotspur (England, he plays goal-keeper)
6) Lionel Messi. Argentina. 27. Barcelona (Spain)
7) Vincent Kompany. Belgium. 28. Manchester City (England)
8) Gokhan Inler. Switzerland. 29. Napoli (Italy; he is the son of immigrants from Turkey)
9) Claudio Bravo. Chile. 31. Barcelona (Spain, the player is a goal-keeper)
10) Philipp Lahm. Germany. 30. Bayern Munich (Germany)
11) Mario Yepes. Colombia. 38. Atalanta (Italy)

The Last Ten French Films We've Seen: Hopefully, Godard is Pleased with Us
Here are the last ten French-language films we've seen, including "Aaltra," a VERY dark comedy that is a Belgian film which is partially filmed in Finland. It was distributed here in the United States through the Film Movement. And, it aired at 2:00 a.m. back in December on Turner Classics Movies as a film selected by comedian/actor Patton Oswalt who was guest programmer.
This month's Star of the Month on TCM is Mary Astor, who played the femme fatale opposite Humphrey Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon" (she is not French!)
Here is the list (we got this idea from "Film Comment" magazine):
Any film with an (*) is one we watched via Netflix
1) "Aaltra" (Belgium. 2004. dirs.- Gustave de Kervem and Benoit Delepine)
2) "Rules of the Game" (1939. dir-Jean Renoir; see image #1)
3) "Rust and Bone" (2012. dir-Jacques Audiard)
4) "A Woman is a Woman" (1961. dir-Jean-Luc Godard) *
5) "Les Cousins" (1959. dir-Claude Chabrol)
6) "A Burning Hot Summer" (2011. dir-Philippe Garrel) *
7) "Leaving" (2009. dir-Catherine Corsini w/Kristin Scott Thomas) *
8) "Farewell, My Queen" (2012. dir-Benoit Jacquot; see image #2 which of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands)
9) "Un Flic/A Cop" (1972. dir. Jean-Pierre Melville w/Catherine Deneuve; see image #3, which is of a K-9 officer)

The Olympic Lists (5 of 10): Athletes from the European Union Nations
Yes, we are buried in snow here in Virginia as our folks in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, West Virginia, Washington DC, New York City..............in fact, we may get at least 24 inches........maybe even up to 32 inches by day's end! The Weather Channel is reporting 14 inches in my hometown of Roanoke, Va., at this hour.

Little Thinkers Quotes (15 of 16): Vincent Van Gogh
Greetings to our blog readers in Slovakia, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia.
Also, we want to say a special hello to our good friends Mitt Romney, Michael Moore and Dick Vitale; we are sure all three of them are looking at this blog instead of watching college basketball or men's speed skating at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia!
Here is the quote from the great Dutch master:
"I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day."

Teaser for DC Week (1 of 2): Meet the Dutch Ambassador
On Thursday, we will begin a one-week, eight entry series entitled "DC Week" (We chose not to name it "Washington Week" because we don't want Gwen Ifill, our favorite television political/government reporter, who host a PBS called "Washington Week" to sue us for $2.3 million).
We will feature all sorts of fun things, which we aren't quite ready to disclose yet, and we are also weary of the fact that Edward Snowden may have too much time on his hands, and in his spare, he may opt to surf the internet, where he could come across this blog.
The reason for this series is to support our nation's capital during a time of great economic turmoil for the city as the federal government, which oversees the Smithsonian Institute, is closed for business as is the city's historic Ford's Theatre.*
In case you are wondering about the images, they are of: 1) Cong. Gerry Connolly (D-Va., who represents the northern Virginia suburbs of DC); 2) The Lincoln Memorial (which is alas closed for business due to the shut down) ; and Ambassador Rudolf Bekink (pictured with President Barack Obama) who is the Dutch ambassador to the United States.
*- But, the current production of Ford's Theatre's play "The Laramie Project" may continue at another location in DC; we hope to have that info to you the blog-reader in Latvia by tomorrow.

Tweets Considering All Things Considering Washington DC: (2 of 2) The Great Train Robbery
With a government shutdown looming as the House Congressional Republicans are acting like great train robbers of the Wild West (pictured, forgive the editorial commentary, but we stand by it), we thought we'd look like at some tweets from all perspectives in the nation's capital.
Let's get started (not all tweets pertain to the train robbery):
1) Suzy Khimm ( a liberal journalist who has written for "Mother Jones" and "The Washington Post"): "Republicans have abandoned any pretense that the debt limit fight is about debt."
2) David Corn (a liberal journalist who is an editor for "Mother Jones"): "Obama: 'See what the prices are, and make up your mind. '//Letting the market work. What a socialist!" (Corn is referring to the Obamacare squabble)
3.) Washington Diplomat: "NSA spied on Indian embassy and U.N mission. Edward Snowden file reveals."
4.) Jeff A: "#GOPDemands: All people who work for the government should get Obamacare." (Ok, here's our token Republican here).
5) The Hill: "Senator Barb Mikulshki (D-Md.): GOP can huff and puff, but they won't blow Obamacare away."
6) Rudolf Benkirk (the Dutch ambassador to America): "Only feathers and a bird are natural than a Dutch man or woman on a bicycle. #ThinkBikeChicago"
UPDATE: We decided to add the black-footed ferret which was tweeted about by the National Zoo. To see that tweet, go to our sister blog: http://www.politicscultureandotherwastesoft.blogspot.com

8 Things You Need to Know: DC Turkish Fetival, UNC Volleyball and Sen. Ted Cruz
1. The 11th Annual Washington D.C. Turkish Festival will be happening on Sunday. It will take place between 12th and 14th Street, two blocks from the White House. The event will feature folk dancing, musical performances, coffee fortune reading and (of course) very authentic ethnic cuisine (pictured top).
2. The University of North Carolina Tarheels' women's volleyball team will face ACC rival North Carolina on their home gym floor in Chapel Hill, NC, at Carmichael Arena, but the game, which starts at 8:00 p.m. tonight (eastern time) will also be televised on ESPN-U. Victoria McPherson (Number Seven, pictured center) was named ACC Player of the Week. The Tarheels are undefeated so far.
3) Though the game will not be nationally televised, the Yale Bulldogs will be facing their first Ivy League opponent when the Brown U Bears come to New Haven, Conn., on Sat. @ 5:00 p.m. Jesse Ebner of Yale was named co-Ivy League Player of the week.
4) In tragic news, Elif Yavuz, 33, a Dutch citizen of Turkish heritage was gunned down along with her Aussie boyfriend Ross Langdon, 33, at the Westgate Shopping Center in a violence rampage in Nairobi, Kenya, that has claimed at least 62 lives. The massacre/hostage situation started on Saturday. Yavuz was eight and a half months pregnant. She had performed work on behalf on the Clinton Foundation. Former president Bill Clinton praised Yavuz, who was also a Harvard alum.
5) The Salem Red Sox, the single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, won its first Carolina League title since 2001, and the first since the team joined the Red Sox family. The defeated the Potomac Nationals to win the title. Mugsy (pictured bottom) is the team mascot.
6) One of the most fun bands in the word the Red Elvises are on tour. On Thursday night, the band performs at Moe's (yes that is the actual name of the venue, we were thinking about "The Simpsons" too) in Englewood, Colo., on Thursday night. The venue's phone number is 303.781.0414
7) Along with Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rand Paul (R-Ky), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx) stands out among the Tea Party crazies who are gradually hijacking the Republican Party. Just a few hours ago, Cruz wrapped on his 21-hour speech, which included a reading of the Dr. Seuss classic "Green Eggs and Ham" (?!). He now gives new meaning to the term Ted Talks (TED Talks is a series of talks given about technology and socially relevant issues, such as education).
8) Teasers: In the coming days, we hope to have tweets about tweets relating to all things Washington, DC, which includes not just Congress, but the National Zoo. In addition, we are hoping to post some entries related to both Book Week and Banned Week (we believe both are going on this week). Stay tuned..............

Soccer Week (7 of 8): Dutch Soccer Game Has Three Cards
During domestic weekend action in the Eredivise (Dutch Premier League), one game between Heerenveen and Gromgen featured six goals and three red cards, one of which went to Dutch nationl Tjaronn Chery (pictured).
The game's other two red cards went to Mitchell Dijks of Heerenveen and Jim Letschert of Gronngen.
Other highlights from Holland/The Netherlands included a two-goal performance form Belgian Steve de Ridder of Utrecht and two goals from Chery's teammate from Iceland, Alfred Finnbogason, who should have made our soccer players with long names list, who kicked in two goals for Heerenveen.
One lowlight which was shown on soccer highlights shows around the globe was Dutch player Maikel van der Werff's unfortunate own goal which helped his team Zwolle lose to traditional Dutch power Ajax Amsterdam 2-1.
Here are the scores:
Utrecht 2 Waalwijk 1
AZ Alkmaar 3 Go Ahead Eagles 0
Heerevveen 4 Gromgen 2
Roda 1 Breda 5
Njmegen 3 Feyrenoord 3 (tie)
Twente 2 PSV Einhoven 2 (tie)
Cambour 2 Heracles 0
Ajax Amsterdam 2 Zwolle 1

Coming This Week (we hope): Futbol Week
If all goes well, we are hoping to launch a seven-week series entitled Futbol Week. Our aim is to post lists, soccer results and perhaps Twitter feeds from soccer experts, such as Turkish soccer enthusiast Ahmet Bob Turgut and Grant Wuhl.
We will also be focusing on specific domestic league, and see how some of you favorite teams, including the Dutch futbol team Go Ahead Eagles (yes, that is their real name) with Turkish international Deniz Turuc (pictured above) who grew up in the Netherlands and Turkish soccer team BursaSpor with Argentine national Pablo Battalla (pictured below) perform as Week 4 gets underway in most UEFA-sanctioned domestic leagues.
Of course, the big news in the soccer world today is that Mesut Ozil, a German international player of Turkish heritage, has signed a 'cok para' (Turkish term for lots of loot) to transfer from Real Madrid to Arsenal.
Ironically, Aresnal ousted Turkish soccer team Fenerbahce from the UEFA playoffs just over a week ago without Ozil's help.

Before We Take a Week Off: Top 10 Embarrasing Ways to Die
Greetings to our friends in the Netherlands, Turkey and Mexico.
We went back and forth on this, but we decided it would provide relief from a subject matter that makes sitting through episodes of "Six Feet Under" difficult to sit through. Speaking of which if actor Michael C. Hall has time on his hands and visits this blog, we just have to ask: "What the expletive are you gonna do after 'Dexter'"? Hopefully, those of you in Utrecht, Gaziantep and Puebla got the joke (those are cities in Holland, Turkey and Mexico).
Here we go with the Top 10 Most Embarrassing Ways to Die:
1. Drowning while fishing in the New River in West Virginia.
2. Choking on a Pay Day candy bar.
3. Trying to take a photo of Gustave the man-eating crocodile while vacationing in Burundi (We heard about him through "Mental Floss" magazine)
4. Tripping into an on-coming DC Metro subway train (a DC-Metro map is our middle image)
5. Getting hit in the head by a foul ball at a Detroit Tigers baseball game.
6. Getting hit by an on-coming car after shopping at K-Mart.
7. Smoke inhalation from smoking Camels in bed.
8. Getting struck by lightning while trying to fix satellite tv.
9. Getting run over by your very own car or truck (Alas, this did actually happen to a mail carrier in Charlotte, NC)
10. Slipping on a banana peel

Blogging Free-Style: Let's Talk About Jurror B29
Here is how this works. We go with trending items in the news, such as 'Juror B29' and 'Royal Baby' and then add them in with other things we threw in the pot, such as Egypt, and we make a short blog entry out of it. We'll signal the catch phrases by putting a single parenthesis around them.
Here it goes:
"Well, I should be watching Charlie Rose, I gather he is going to talk with guests about political instability in 'Egypt,' but the remote is stuck on CNN, so we'll have to hear about 'George Zimmerman,' 'Jurror B29,' 'the royal baby' (yawn!) and how state legislators in Oklahoma are deliberating to decide if jaywalkers in Tulsa deserve 'the death penalty.'
I wonder how is the weather in 'Winston-Salem, NC,' but the remote will not let me visit the Weather Channel either. Perhaps, I can find out that info via 'Google.' I can also find out when 'Ramadan' ends, so I can send Ramadan greeting cards from Target to all my Muslim friends. Wait. Target doesn't carry Ramadan cards. In fact, no one seems to.
Oh, now CNN is talking about 'Anthony Weiner' (yawn), and apparently 'Pope Francis' is set to visit Holland (the Netherlands)."

Things We Learned on Bing Today: KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) Founded in 1919
Since we are a bit pressed for time today and we want to find out new information on the latest round of police crackdowns against protestors in Istanbul, Turkey, stemming from the government's decision to graze historic, scenic Gezi Park in Taksim Square, we are going to return to an old stand-by.
For these segments, we ask a major search engine a general question. Today, it was: "When was KLM founded?"
As it turns out, the Dutch carrier happens to be the world's oldest airline operating under its own name. KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) was founded in 1919; the major hub of the airline is Shiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
KLM has 136 destinations around the globe. It merged with Air France in 2004, and the Dutch airline is also a member of the SkyTeam Alliance.
Perhaps, it's time to go back and visit Amsterdam, we we did in 1993 to revisit the Vincent Van Gogh Museum!
The Netherlands is also one of the countries in which the blog receives the most amount of hits, though per capita, we think either Latvia or El Salvador might be the two countries in which we are most popular...........perhaps?!

Things We Learned on Bing Today- Sports Edition
Today was an interesting day in English soccer as Arsenal got the coveted fourth place finish thanks to a 1-0 win over Newcastle; their crosstown rival Tottenham also won their match with Sunderland by the same 1-0 score but Arsenal had the advantage going into league play today.
So, this got Javier the Intern* thinking about a good post idea for today, and that is: "What sports can we learn on Bing today?"
Here is what we found out:
1) Thomas Vermaelen, 27, of Belgium, (pictured) is the current captain for Arsenal, though the English club's star player is arguably English national Theo Walcott. Thomas wears #5 and he previously played for Dutch powerhouse Ajax Amsterdam.
2) Siem de Jong, 24, of the Netherlands/Holland is the current captain of Ajax Amsterdam, a team that just won its 32nd domestic league title. Siem wears #10.
3) Ken Dryden, 65, of Canada, is the NHL goalie who has won the most Stanley Cup titles. Dryden achieved his with the great Montreal Canadiens teams of the 1970's as he won cups in 1971, 1973, 1976-79. Dryden was also a member of the Liberal Part in the Canadian Parliament.
4) Grant Hill, 40, an alumnus of Duke University who plays for the Phoenix Suns is the oldest active current player in the NBA though his team did not qualify for the quarterfinals.
5) Mallory Hagan, 24, is the current Miss America. She represented New York state. Yeah, we know beauty pageants may not qualify as a sport, but hey we need the hits!
