New and Improved Top Ten American Cities We'd Like to Visit: From Miami to Vancouver
Since we returned back from Costa Rica on Black Friday, we've been thinking about where else would like to travel during our time here on earth, and if we die a premature death like Austrian pop star Falco, we hope we can come back to life as the Buddhistst suggest, so we can visit Detroit (actually a city which just missed making this life).
For this list, we are focusing on North American cities, and our sister blog "Politics, Culture and Other Wastes of Time" http://www.politicscultureandotherwastesoft.blogspot.com we look at cities we would like to visit in Europe.
It should be pointed that cities we adore, like Denver, New York and Baltimore are not on this list because we wanted to focus on cities we've never visited.
And, without any further interruptions, here is the list:
1) Miami, Florida ("Miami Vice" is pictured top)
2) Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (The logo for the Vancouver Canucks is pictured center)
2) Seattle, Washington (pictured bottom)
4) San Francisco, California
5) Portland, Oregon (but, we have been to Portland, Maine, this Portland is the one where "Portlandia" takes place)
6) Guadalajara, Mexico
7) Los Angeles, California
8) Minneapolis, Minnesota
9) Dallas, Texas
10, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Highlights from The Bucket List: Going to Seattle Anyone?
Yes, even though I'm only 43 years old, I actually made a bucket list of 100 things to do before I die. Some things are a bit more idealistic; some things are a bit more practical.
With that, I want to send special greetings to our blog-readers in Russia, China and Japan as well as those of you in smaller countries like Malta and El Salvador.
Here are some of the highlights:
1. Take a Greyhound bus trip from Burlington, NC, to Seattle.
2. Go to Iceland, and take some photos of the volcanoes while you are there.
3. Watch "Breaking Bad" on dvd in its entirety (I have yet to see a single show of the series which concludes this weekend).
4. Write an article for "Mental Floss."
5. Wake up at 6 a.m. for six days in a row?! (I'm a night person)
6. Take a Varan bus trip (Varan is a Turkish bus line) from Istanbul to Van
7. Date a woman 20 years younger than you
8. Date a woman 20 years older than you
9. Visit the National Zoo in Washington, DC, take lots of photos of the pandas
10. Volunteer at a homeless shelter

Tweets of the Night_ Politics, Sports and Religion
AAAAAUUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! This just in: The Washington Nationals have lost in the deciding Game 5 to the St. Louis Cardinals by a 9-7 score.
In case you are wondering, the third image is of an Armenian Orthodox priest. Since I am a Turkish-American, I thought of no greater irony, my favorite word in the English language, than to use an image of him for this entry. Above him is the American vice president Joe Biden and a kid playing little league baseball.
Here are 12 tweets from about 2.5 hours ago:
1) @MLBJesus (Major League Baseball Jesus): Thou shall pitch Strasburg in Game 5.
2) @JournalNow (Winston-Salem Journal): High Point University poll shows post-deabte bump for Romney among North Carolina voters.
3) @cnni (CNN International): Report says Turkey to avoid Syrian airspace.
4) @_faris (Faris): Saturday morning, the life version of "The Walking Dead."
5) @timesland (Roanoke Times Sports): Halifax County comes back from 20-0 and defeats Franklin county 37-36 in double over-time.
6) @seattletimes (Seattle Times): "Arrest in Seattle Tour de Banks robberies."
7) @katrinanation (Katrina vanden Heuvel, managing editor of the liberal journal "The Nation"): "Joe Biden may have bracing set of old teeth but Paul Ryan lying through his young teeth."
8) @sesameworkshop (Sesame Workshop): "We are a non-partisan, non-profit organization. We do not comment on campaigns, but we're happy we can agree that everyone likes Big Bird!"
9) @thekinghtshift (Chris Knight, blogger from Reidsville, NC): "Big Bird is a monument to all your sins #obama #romney."
10) @mtaibbi (Matt Taibbi, liberal reporter for "Rolling Stone"): "Apparently, Obama needs to rush the passer more."
11) @BigBird (a liberal blogger who is not related to "Sesame Street"): "GOPer sent me an email why Obama's out of touch with times, using an AOL account"
12) @BaltSunSports ("Baltimore Sun" sports, alas the Baltimore Orioles also lost tonight): "Memorable season will have #Orioles aiming even higher in 2013."

10 People Who Will Decide Who Becomes Prez (1 of 10): Rock and Roller in Seatlle Suburb
Name: Steve Nichols
Age: 48
Reisdency: Bellevue, Washington.
Job: Rock and Roll Guitar Player
Will Likely Vote: Obama
***_Notice: please see disclaimers at the end of this entry
The suburban vote will be crucial for both President Barack Obama and his challenger Mitt Romney. Center-right political pundit David Brooks said (if our recollection is accurate) that the shift in the politics of suburbs in places like Philadelphia, Seattle and Raleigh were ones which enable Obama to win over John McCain in 2008.
Washington state has voted for Democrats in every election since 1992 and even though there are Republican strong-holds in places like Spokane, Yakima and Everett, we expect that Obama will carry the state again this year.
Bellevue, Washington, right across the lake from Seattle, is actually considered one of the best places to live in America, according to Wikipedia. The 2010 Census indicated that the 98006 zip code had a population of 122, 363, and the town was on the boom until the economic recession of 2008.
Among its famous citizens are Ann and Nancy Wilson who formed the band Heart; they objected to the use of their song "Baricuda" at the 2008 Republican Convention.
Bellevue is sister cities with Yao, Japan, and three other cities around the globe.
DISCLAIMER: Steve Nichols is a fictional character, though there are at least two relatively famous people with that name including an American soap opera actor and an American car design engineer.
The image is actually of guitar player/producer Mark Hermann who has played for the likes of Foreigner and Joe Walsh. We have no idea what his age, residential area and politics are.
SIDEBAR: Pigs swimming in the Bahamas?! Yes, there is a hysterical short piece in the current issue of "Mental Floss" about these creatures. They were apparently left by a fleet for a barbecue, which never occured. Of course, this might hurt the magazine's circulation in Karachi, Pakistan!
There is also a wonderful photo on the search engine bing.com of multi-colored buckets in the African nation of Burkina Faso.
And, lastly, we noticed that we had a hit from Algeria today....we are quite impressed that you were able to discover us!

Things We Learned on Twitter Today: Snows-a-Coming to Northwest USA

According to a tweet from "The Seattle Times," there is a winter storm warning that has been issued for the Cascades region of central and eastern Washington state where they are expecting (double yikes!), one to three feet of freaking snow by Friday afternoon!
Comic strip artist/political cartoonist Keith Knight who pens "The Knight Life" will be protesting in front of "The Seattle Times" today as they newspaper dropped his comic strip. According to the comic strip's web site, Knight said he was ironically on his way to Seattle to give the editor a fruit basket for deciding to add "The Knight Life"!
And, "The Onion" also has a 'story' about the Northwest part of the United States today as they put together a mock article regarding people's opinions over the disclosure that the property which was once the location of the Unabomber's log cabin in a remote part of western Montana is up for sale. Kylie Laskin (since "The Onion" publishes fake stories, we have no idea if she is a real person) said: "That (the property) would be a perfect place for my Kevorkian van."
We also want to pass our condolences to the friends and family of Elizabeth Edwards who passed away at her home in Chapel Hill, NC, yesterday from a seven-year fight with cancer. But, I must profess I'm glad I backed out of volunteering for her estranged husband John Edwards for the South Carolina primary. We all know what happened there!
Top trending topics on Twitter today include: Grinch, Birthday Ian, Yoko Ono, Pearl Harbor, Rubin and Glee Christmas.

Things We Learned on Twitter Today- Asterix is a Popular Baby's Name in Seattle?
Well, not exactly, but I would have sooner expected to find the French comic book hero Asterix the Gaul (seen here with Obelix his sidekick-the fat guy) to be as popular as Alexander, which is in fact the most popular name for boy babies in Washington state.
According to a tweet from "The Seattle Times," in 2009, Alexander was the most popular name for boys in the state while Isabella was the most popular name for girls.
The top five boys' names also included Jacob, William, Ethan and Daniel. While the other top five girls' names were Olivia, Sophia, Emma and Abigail.
Our good friend Andrew Neal offers "Asterix " comic books at Chapel Hill Comics in Chapel Hill, NC, where I am supposed to be at the moment, but we are actually in Wasila, Alaska, hanging out on the firing range with Todd and Sarah Palin (that's a joke, of course).
SIDEBAR: On a more somber note, Adam L. Dickmyer of Winston-Salem, NC, was killed in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan during an improvised vehicle explosion that happened on Oct. 28. Dickmyer was 26, and a graduate of Carver High School.
SIDEBAR TWO: On a ligther note, comic actor Rainn Wilson of "The Office" fame tweeted today that: "I have to go to the bathroom." We hope he is not at a certain bus station in the Bostanci section of Istanbul* or a Sheetz gas station in South Boston, Va. ** I had very bad experiences with the toilets in both places, but since we are not fans of 'bahtroom humor,' we will stop while we're ahead!
*- In case, you are really curious, this place had a Turkish toilet. Eyvah! (That's 'Oh No!' in Turkish).
**-They had no toilet paper!

Quote of the Week- Maya Angelou
This Quote of the Week which is being done in conjunction with the Fourth of July as we are quoting famous Americans on Mondays this month. Since Bastille Day, the French day of independence in on July 14th, we will be quoting famous French people on Wednesdays this month as well.
I thought this quote from poet Maya Angelou who teaches just down the proverbial road at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, would be appropriate since we are working on the laundry!:
"Achievement brings its own anticlimax."
SIDEBAR: The Twitter feeds were quite busy this p.m.
We learned that Trophy Cupcakes in Seattle is lobbying to win a new Best in Seattle poll in "Seattle Weekly."
Nathan Tabor, a conservative activist in Winston-Salem who I normally differ strongly with, had an interesting link about a Texas store which sold an American flag with 61 stars. I guess they're counting Guam and Puerto Rico and some other places!
Cartoonist Darrin Bell who pens "Candorville" said: "I'm alone in a Cosco and so scared."
While "Zippy the Pinhead" himself (an alternative comic strip from Bill Griffith) said: "The Korean War must have been fun!"
Lastly, we learned that University of Michigan gymnast Kari Pierce who is actually from Ann Arbor, Mich., had a birthday today. We don't know; however, if she is old enough to drink an Amstel Light at Applebee's just quite yet!

PSA- Please Ride the Bus!
We should admit upfront that (since I haven't ridden a public bus domestically in ages) that this is a 'a bit hypocritical,' but nevertheless we should all 'ride the bus' more often. The last time I rode a bus, for any substantial duration, was between the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara in Turkey in 2008.
I got this idea when I saw a Valley Metro bus pass me as I was walking down Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke, Va., yesterday. The public bus service is available throughout the Roanoke metro area, including the suburbs of Salem and Vinton.
(We should point out that this picture is actually of a bus in Seattle, which is very far from Roanoke!).
According to the Valley Metro web site, passengers may bring a baby stroller on the bus as well as service pets, though one can bring a pet on-board if it is in a carrier. For more info, one should contact 540-982-2222.
If you are in the Seattle-area, you can contact the public bus services for King County (Washington) at 206-553-3000.

Random Top Five Depressing Films List
I must admit that film fans love making lists, and nowhere is that more apparent than "Film Comment" magazine, which features several lists in his front pages these days.
Here is a random list I made of the five most depressing films I've ever seen. Since I wrote it up in a mere five minutes, there are assuredly some downers I have overlooked....."Sounder" comes to mind.
All of these films are either foreign films or documentaries and "Night and Fog," a 1955 French documentary on The Holocaust is actually both!
I made the mistake of watching "The Bridge," a documentary about people who killed themselves by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco the same week I went to The Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. (I don't recommend doing that). One of the people who committed suicide actually flew in from Houston to jump off the bridge.
"Pixote" is a 1981 Brazilian film about a boy whose mother is a prostitute (it will make the Apu triology seem uplifting!). It was so depressing that I literally could not get out of bed the day after I watched it.
The film's young star Fernando Ramos da Silva (1967-1987) would die from gun violence when police shot him to death at the age of 19. "Pixote" was his only film. the film's director Hector Babenco went on to make "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" and other critically-praised films.
"Streetwise" is a documentary about homeless people in Seattle. The plight of the children in the film make it especially difficult to watch.
And, "At/The Horse," a film which came out some 20 years ago from acclaimed director Ali Ozgenturk, is about a destitute Turkish villager who moves from the country to Istanbul with his son.
Amazingly enough, no German or Russian films made this list!:
1. "The Bridge" (doc)
2. "Streetwise" (doc)
3. "Pixote"
4. "Night and Fog"
5. "At/The Horse."
PS_ After publishing this post, I decided to look to see if there was a group involved with preventing suicides from the Golden Gate Bridge. And, there is indeed a Golden Gate Suicide Barrier Coalition. Their web site is www.goldengatecitizens.com/suicide

Letter of the Week.......about Barack Obama
As I approach 40 (I am 38 now), I realize that I have gone from being a fervent liberal to a moderate liberal. In some ways, it is depressing to be less idealistic than the likes of Michael Moore or Tim Robbins, but on the other hand, it is better than going to the dark side like Jon Voight or Cat Stevens! (I am not sure which would be worse becoming an arch conservative, dittohead Republican or an Islamic fundamentalist! )
The election of Barack Obama however is the one thing my past and former self can find comfort in, and this letter by Aaron Warner of Seattle to "Rolling Stone" reflects why:
"At first, I didn't think the Illinois senator had a plan to restore America to her former glory, but after reading the interview (in "Rolling Stone"), I finally realize the president-elect has been playing his cards close to his chest."
