Movies Plus Movies: Yes, We Stole This Idea from Twitter

Last week, Twitter featured the hashtag MoviePlusMovie. At first, we couldn't think of anything, but since all of us here at the public library in Providence, Rhode Island, (not really the city where we are) are ardent film fanatics, we soon came up with tons of stuff.

While we are posting this, we are listening to WETA-FM (Arlington, Va./Washington, D.C.) which is having a pledge week. Alas, we don't have the funds to call host Bill Bukowski and make a donation so we can hear more Mozart, but perhaps you can! Those of you who aren't into classical music, may know Mozart from the '80s pop song "Rock Me Amadeus" from the late Austrian new wave star Falco.

Our images of are of: 1) a bobblehead Jesus Christ, (perhaps the Rev. Johnny Robertson of Martinsville, Va., will hack our blog for doing this!); 2) Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and 3) The Toledo Walleye, a minor league hockey team in Toledo, Ohio, which resembles the one Paul Newman played for in "Slap Shot" (1977. Dir: George Roy Hill).

Quote of the Week- Elizabeth Taylor

Today we are featuring Elizabeth Taylor as we continue to quip famous Americans in the month of July since the Fourth of July was celebrated earlier in the month. On Wednesdays,we quote French people. I suppose the late American jazz singer Josephine Baker, who lived in France for a long time, could be used for both series!

We are also featuring Paul Newman (1925-2008) her co-star from the cinematic 1958-version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" on our other blog today.

This quote from Taylor will most assuredly make most of you laugh (we hope!):

SIDEBAR: Are you wondering what to do around 11:30 p.m. this evening? Well, if you reside near Chapel Hill, NC, you don't want to watch Charlie Rose interviewing the American ambassador to Syria** and you are big fan of the latest Canadian superhero* Scott Pilgrim, then........

............you can head down to Chapel Hill Comics @ midnight tonight for the release party of "Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour."

The store is offering free posters for the first seven people who dress like Scott Pilgrim.

So, if you reside like 80 miles away in Roanoke Rapids, NC, or South Boston, Va., you better get moving around 9:30 p.m.!

It should be noted that Chapel Hill Comics will actually be closed from 9:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. tonight, but we imagine the local Starbucks are open until at least 10 p.m.

*-He lives in Toronto, and supposedly he has a gay roomate, which may hurt comic book sales in Provo, Utah

**(we're not sure who's on the Charlie Rose Show tonight and actually we don't know who the ambassador to Syria is. But, if/when we have these tidbits, we'll tweet them for you!).

ECHL Update- The Conference Finals are Underway

As many regulars on this blog now, we have been posting more entries about sports since last year simply because I evolved into a bit of a couch potato, but I have yet to watch a single game of the NBA or NHL playoffs so far.

Nevertheless, we thought we'd post an entry about the East Coast Hockey League, which is one of the leading minor leagues in pro hockey.

Today, the impressive Idaho Steelheads, lead by goalie Richard Bachman who is only giving up 1.75 goals in the playoffs, host the Stockton Thunder in Boise, Ida., at 7:10 local time. The Thunder are based in Stockton, Calif. And, Richard Bachman was also a pen name that Stephen King when writing such novels as "Thinner." We think the Steelheads will win this series in five games as they are the top seed with a
48-17-7 record. The Thunder are the sixth seed, and they have a 33-29-6 record.

In the east (the ECHL used to only consist of east coast teams including our beloved Roanoke Express from my hometown of Roanoke, Va. The Express alas no longer exist), the fifth seed Cincinnati Cyclones host the seventh seed Reading Royals from Reading, Pa. The drop of the proverbial puck will be at 7:30 p.m.

My favorite hockey movie happens to be "Slap Shot," a 1977 film about a minor league hockey team with the late Paul Newman which takes place in Johnstown, Pa. One could argue that minor league hockey players don't curse as much as Newman's character did in the film, but somehow we sense this stereotype might actually be fairly accurate!
