Last Ten Songs We Listened To on 106.1-SteveFM in Roanoke, Va.: For God's Sake, Why Play Whitesnake?

Greetings to our esteemed blog readers in Finland, Uruguay and Australia..........

Yes, we can't understand why oldies radio station that play 'our music' from the 1980s play hair metal bands like Whitesnake, Twisted Sister and Cinderella either. We are the 'I Want My MTV" Generation X'ers who purchased records and tapes from these bands, and we did see them perform in concert (True confession: I saw Whitesnake in concert, but they were opening for Heart), but now we aren't that interested in these bands (oh, I forgot to mention Ratt and Poison too), but young folks seem to be. So, we will be tortured by these songs we made famous until we are old enough to play shuffleboard at a nursing home in Pensacola, Florida. Perhaps, this is what we deserve for the mistakes of our youth.............

Now that we've had our little rant, here are the last ten songs we listened to 106.1-SteveFM in Roanoke, Va.:

1) Best Day of My Life. American Authors. 2013

2) Let's Go All the Way. Sly Fox. 1985.

3) Don't Go Breaking My Heart." Elton John (pict. bottom) and Kiki Dee. 1976.

4) 'Livin' on a Prayer.' Bon Jovi (pict. center). 1986

5) I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). The Proclaimers. 1988/93 (song was made famous by Johnny Depp film "Benny and Joon")

6) "West End Girls." Pet Shop Boys. 1984/2001

7) "Old Time Rock and Roll." Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. 1979. (song was a hit when released, but became popular again in 1983 thanks to the early Tom Cruise film "Risky Business")

8) "Holiday." Madonna (pict. top) 1983

9) "Demons" Imagine Dragons. 2013.

10) "Here I Go Again." Whitesnake. 1982/87.

Last Ten Films I've Seen- Garbo Laughs

Among the last ten films I've seen is a notorious "Jaws" rip-off, two films directed by playwrights ("Margaret" and "Seven Psychopaths") and a vintage British horror film ("Repulsion").

There are also two films with Johnny Depp in the lead ("The Libertine" and "Dead Man") and the film in which cinematic goddess Greta Garbo laughs ("Ninotchka").

In addition, there are two films which are still in cinemas ("R.I.P.D., which I actually saw at a drive-in, and "The Way, Way Back"). Movies I have seen previously are marked with an *.

Here is the list:

1. "Holy Smoke" (1999. dir-Jane Campion)

2. "The Last Shark" ("Great White") (Italy. 1981. dir-Enzo G. Castellari)

3. "Dead Man" (1995. dir-Jim Jarmusch) *

4. "Seven Psychopaths" (2012. dir- Martin McDonagh)

5. "Margaret" (2011. dir-Kenneth Lonengan)

6. "The Way, Way Back" (2013 dir-Nat Faxon and Jim Rush)

7. "R.I.P.D" (2013 dir-Robert Schwentke)

8. "The Libertine"   (2004. dir-Laurence Dunmore)

9. "Repulsion" (1965. dir-Roman Polanski) *

Quote of the Day/Week_ Reinaldo Arenas

We are continuing our quotes from Latin Americans with a quip from the Cuban novelist and poet Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990) who left his island nation in part because of the country's political suppression of homosexuals, such as himself.

Arenas became the subject of the 2000 film "Before the Night Falls" featuring Spanish actor Javier Bardem in the starring role in a film that also included Johnny Depp and Sean Penn. The feature was filmed in Mexico instead of Cuba.

Here is the quote from Arenas:

"I have always considered it despicable to grovel your life as it were a favor. If you can not live the way you want, there is no point in living."

Things We Learned on Twitter Today- Sofia Coppola Likes Rango

Since I have longed though that film director Sofia Coppola was a private person, I was surprised when I heard her give an interview to Terry Gross for the NPR show "Fresh Air." And, I was even more stunned to see that she has a Twitter account.

And, apparently, the director of "Lost in Translation" who turns 40 in May likes the new animated film "Rango" that stars Johnny Depp (well his voice any way):

"Rango is such an amazing film, has anyone seen it? It's like Chinatown for kids, even the old turtle resembled John Huston."

I thought the tweet was a bit ironic since in a book about the Oscars writer Danny Peary said that "Chinatown" should have been chosen as the Best Film of 1974 instead of "The Godfather, Part 2," which Sofia's father directed. (We're not getting into this debate, as fighting and arguing with radical rapture-seeking right-wing extremists like the Rev. Johnny Robertson of Martinsville, Va.*, is our top priority around here!).

As for Sofia Coppola's new film "Somewhere" is showing at one of our favorite cinemas, the Galaxy Cinema in Cary, NC (Raleigh). They are not showing "Rango," but they are also screening "Barney's Version" which a friend of mine in Bethesda, Maryland, really enjoyed!

*- Yes, this is a real person and (of course!) he has his own tv show!
