Sunday Comics Gran Slam (4 of 4): Bleeker Wins the Overall Sweepstakes

Greetings from Charlotte, NC, where we have been hanging out at Heroes Con with Mark Hamill, ok, that is not where we have been this weekend, and we have no idea if the actor who once portrayed Luke Skywalker was in the Queen City, but nonetheless, we needed to get your attention.

Similarly, Shawn Johnson, the American gold medalist gymnast from Iowa, Cuneyt Cakir, the Turkish soccer referee who worked the Brazil-Mexico match at the World Cup, and Yogi Bear, really have nothing to do with his blog entry, but we are competing with thousands of other blogs to win over teenagers in South Korea who are taking a break from playing Donkey Kong (or whatever kids play these days) for 72 straight hours (we hope with bathroom breaks).

So, here are our top 20 comic strips from last Sunday's funny papers. Alas, we are posting them as the world gets to see the latest installment of "Garfield," our apologies to Jim Davis, but his strip about a 38-year-old house cat, did not make the grade.

Here is the list:

1) Bleeker: The Rechargeable Dog 8.6

2) The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee 8.5

3) WUMO 8.4

4) Pardon the Planet 8.3

5) Tundra 8.3

6) Retail 8.3

7) The Argyle Sweater 8.3

8) Speed Bump 8.2

9) Arctic Circle 8.2

10) Tom Tomorrow 8.1

11) Dustin 8.1

12) Zippy the Pinhead 8.0

13) Reply All 8.0

14) Tina's Groove 8.0

15) Brewster Rockit: Space Guy 8.0

16) Knight Life 8.0

17) Mother Goose and Grimm 8.0

18) Sherman's Lagoon 7.9

19) Lio 7.8

20) Doonesbury 7.8

Casualties of Modern Technology (9 of 12)_ Pinball Machines

The rock band The Who had a memorable song from their rock opera "Tommy," about a blind pinball wizard who a miracolous sensation. Today, teenagers may have a hard time understanding the song because there are fewer pinball machines in existence that there were in 1976 when that song was popular.

The pinball machine is a coin-operated arcade game that was formally developed in 1931. The flippers were introduced in 1947. And, solid state electronics were formalized with the pinball game "Hot Tip" in 1977.

There was an initial decline in pinball machine useage in the 1980s thanks to the likes of video games, such as "Ms. Pac-Man" and "Donkey Kong." But, the pinball machines industry fought back by developing innovative pop culture games, such as "The Addams Family" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

The machines have again declined in the advanced hom video games Angry Birds era, though according to Wikipedia, the Illinois pinball company PinBall Manufacturing produced 178 reproductions of the the popular pinball game "Bing Bang Bar" in 2006.

Many pinball players are known to cheat by tipping the machines and even attaching a piece of string to a coin and lowering the counter switch to get free games.

Popular brands include "Dolly Parton" (1979) that was the brainchild of George and Dave Christensen who developed the pinball game for Bally.

There is also "Dirty Harry" (1992), which is based on the succesful "Dirty Harry"
(1971) film with Clint Eastwood which spurred many less remarkable sequels. This particular game, which I also saw at a laundromat in the hamlet of New Castle, Va., (near Roanoke) has sold for between $1,800-$4,000 via Internet auctions.

One can find a Pinball Hall of Fame museum in Las Vegas, which has 400 games.

Additionally, there is Rose City Pinball in Portland, Ore., which hosts weekly tournaments.

Roanoke vs. Greensboro (Entry 1 of 6)_ The Shadowbox or The Idiot Box

Today, we begin our first in a once-a-week (or perhaps once-a-month series) pitting my birthplace and hometown of Roanoke, Va., against my adopted city of Greensboro, NC. The cities' have interesting nicknames as Roanoke is called The Star City and Grensboro is called The Gate City.

The two zip codes are about 110 miles from each other, and in addition to the stateline, the cities are separated from Route 220, which is known for its radical church signs, pro-life billboards and even billboards proclaiming the world is going to come to an end on May 21, 2011 (oops!). There are also billboards with guns and strippers (hmmmm...), and the legaendary speedtrap of Boones Mill, Va., 15 miles outh of Roanoke, where I have somehow never been ticketed.

This week, there are two major events in both cities, and if I lived in Martinsville, Va., which is half-way between the two zip codes, I might need to flip a coin on this one.

The Shadowbox Cinema in Roanoke will be hosting a Donkey Kong tournament before screening the dcoumentary gem "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" (2007). The movie features a video game fanatic named Billy Mitchell, who actually made a fortune selling his own brand of b-b-q sauce. Mitchell always sports an American flag tie, much like the one we had in an entry earlier this week, and he seems very patriotic. The problem with Donkey Kong though is that he has no Boris Spassky (evil Soviet counterpart) as the late Bobby Fischer did when he faced Spassky in that famous Cold War chess showdown.

The tournament satarts at 7:00 p.m. and the film begins at 8:00 p.m., tommorow night.

In Greensboro, The Idiot Box, which is known for its improv troupe featuring Jennie Stencel, Steve Lesser and Bob Bob Beshere among others, will actually be foregoing their usual 10:00 p.m. performance on Saturday night to host the Found Footage Festival. The event will feature rare and supposedly hilarious vhs treasures.

After leaving Greensboro, the Found Footage Festival Tour heads to the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, Colo., one of our favorite cities--though it is very far from here, on June 16.

We discovered some interesting things about the Idiot Box while researching this piece. As it turns, Stencel, a blonde-haired woman who is a local celebrity from her years as a morning traffic reporter on a local tv station, has her own Wikipedia page. From what we gathered, she is also married to Lesser. We did not know that!

I should add that Jason Garnett, the manager of the Shadowbox Cinema, is a personal friend of mine, so while I enjoy the Idiot Box, I must profess a bias towards the Star City venue. Having said that, I would assuredly get my deriere kicked in any video game tournament! In addition, the Unknown Comic is not coming to the Idiot Box, but since he was popular in the 1970s, he is probably well past his prime, which of course means he should open a show in Las Vegas!

Lastly, we don't want to create false impressions as to our knowledge The Shadowbox is not showing a Bruce Lee film this month, but if Jason chooses to show "Enter the Dragon" I am so there....well, unless it's a school night.

No April Fools Joke This Year

For several weeks, I had contemplated saying that my screenplay for "My Dinner with Andre 2" which was also co-written by Dennis Alexander (my alias) and Nishan Shakashi (the Turkish word for April Fools) was green-lighted by IFC Films. I was going to add that it had full approval from the original stars and screenwriters Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory. And, that this 'sequel' to the 1981 film about two men in a a restaurant talking was going to be directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Ultimately, since both Shawn and Gregory are alive and well, and we really need to get out of Graham, NC* for a weekend getaway, that this was not in our best interest.

I was in sueded version of "My Dinner with Andre" which we made for the Shadowbox Cinema in Roanoke, Va. The cinema's manager, my friend Jason Garnett, announced that they will host a screening of the doc "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters," complete with a Donkey Kong competition.

The real version of "Andre" is available from Criterion classics.

*-We are not really in Graham, NC, but a town similar to it.

PS- We goofed in yesterday's entry as the UNH Wildcats lost to Notre Dame in the men's college quarterfinals. Yale was the team that lost to Minn-Duluth.

Dead or Alive (Entry 9 of 12)_ Soupy Sales

Since we are quite behind in my plans for this blog (well, we aren't exactly The Huffington Post quite yet), I thought I would do some catching up and focus on the Dead or Alive series, which in all honesty is less enjoyable than I thought it would be.

Nevertheless, we continue on with our latest subject '60s children's tv show host Soupy Sales.

Our last subject Pat Boone is indeed alive and well, and we gather that he is still a far right wing nut.

Here is some info on Mr. Sales:

-Has been hit with over 25,000 in his show business career- perhaps, he should have been a substitute high school teacher!

-Howard Stern is an admirer of his, and Sales has appeared on Stern's ever controversial radio show.

-Sales met his wife dancer Trudy Carson while performing on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

-Sales was voted the most popular guy in his high school class

-Had a surprise novelty hit song "Do the Mouse"

-Guest-starred on the original version of "The Love Boat" (who didn't?!)

-First actor to voice the Donkey Kong video game character
